The first veggie pride parade in North America will take place in New York City on May 18, 2008. The procession will begin at 12 noon in the Old Meat District and will culminate in Washington Square Park, where a festival of rock music, speakers, and exhibitors will take place. This US-based parade is inspired by the Veggie Pride Parade in Paris, the first of its kind ever to take place in the world and has been taking place annually since 2001.
More budding vegheads in the Middle East. ArabianBusiness reports that the demand for vegetarian menu options in the United Arab Emirates is increasing as diners become more health conscious.
Prozac for your dog? According to pharmaceutical giant, Eli Lilly (maker of the anti-depressant Prozac), fear of abandonment is much more widespread than people realize. The symptons: moodiness, lack of appetitie, and spontaneous attacks on the furniture. The company claims that millions of dogs are among the sufferers, and that their newly launched "Reconcile" canine anti-depressant medication can "help restore the human-pet bond." (Guess anything will do to push a pill).
On the eve of peak oil - How to cut fuel costs
The obvious: Drive less, use mass transit, bike, walk, or purchasing a fuel efficient vehicle. For times when driving a car is a necessity: Don't be a jerky driver - jumpy starts and fast getaways can burn over 50% more gasoline than normal acceleration. Use cruise control once accelerated. Drive slower - according to the US Department of Energy, most automobiles get about 20% more miles per gallon on the highway at 55 miles per hour than they do at 70 miles per hour. A well maintained car (oil change, fuel filters, tire pressure, alignment) gets an average of 10% better fuel efficiency. Turn off your engine if you stop for more than one minute. Restarting the automobile will use less gasoline than idling for more than one minute. Decrease the number of short trips you make. Short trips drastically reduce gas mileage. If an automobile gets 20 miles per gallon in general, it may get only 4 miles per gallon on a short trip of 5 miles or less.
