Health News
Going vegetarian and cutting back on animal protein may lower your levels of a substance linked to some cancers. In a recent study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers discovered that the 21 study members who had been following a low-protein vegetarian diet for at least two years had lower blood levels of plasma insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), a protein found at high levels in people with pre-menopausal breast cancer, prostate cancer, and certain colon cancers.
"I believe our findings suggest that protein intake may be very important in regulating cancer risk," says lead study author L. Fontana, MD, who recommends choosing more whole grains, beans, fruits, vegetables, and reducing intake of meat, cheese, eggs, and butter. (Whole Life Magazine, 03/07)
The U.S. government's Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) concealed evidence indicating dangerously high levels of lead in children's plastic lunchboxes according to documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act released in February 2007. Back in 2005, the nonprofit Center for Environmental Health investigations found high levels of lead in children's vinyl lunchboxes. The CPSC immediately countered that report by saying its own studies revealed no problems. However, documents now show the agency's own tests actually found lead contamination up to 16 times higher than what is allowed in lead paint. The government's motivation for a cover-up that threatens the health of the nation's children is unclear, but an allied group of state Attorney Generals is being organized to ultimately remove these lunchboxes from the marketplace... read full article
| TIP: Avoid lunchboxes made of PVC which are typically the squishy plastic type of "bag" boxes. You can also order a lead lunchbox testing kit from the Center for Environmental Health (testyourlunchbox.com). Or purchase your next lunch box from the makers of the Laptop Lunches System. The Laptop Lunch boxes and kits, including the carrying cases, are completely free of lead. Their lunch box systems are suitable for adults as well as school children of all ages. |

Final Thoughts
When dining at a non-veg restaurant and you are not in the mood to explain or defend your vegetarianism, you could tell your waiter, "I AM ALLERGIC TO MEAT." Hahaha...
