Animal Antibiotics Discovered in Common Vegetables
Spreading raw manure on fields from animals treated with antibiotics is a common practice on conventional farms. Unfortunately scientists have now discovered that vegetables like corn and cabbage absorb those antibiotics, which are then ingested by consumers.

"Vegetarians may think the huge overuse of antibiotics in livestock and poultry will not affect them, but that's not true," stated M. Mellon, the director of the Union of Concerned Scientists. "Consumers eating vegetables grown on soil fertilized with manure may be unknowingly ingesting antibiotics." Regular consumption of these antibiotics can then cause bacteria in the body to become resistant... read more at: http://www.organicconsumers.org/foodsafety/

Two Small Victories for Animals: Shutting down multi-national fast-food chains

Bye Bye KFC
A Eugene Oregon KFC recently closed its doors and boarded up its windows following a relentless series of weekly protests that began in June 2005.

KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken), a leading international fast-food chain, breeds and drugs chickens to grow so large that many become crippled from the weight of their massive upper bodies. The birds are often still conscious when they have their throats slit and are scalded to death in defeathering tanks. An undercover investigation at a KFC slaughterhouse revealed that workers were stomping on live birds, tearing their heads off, spitting tobacco in their eyes, and spray-painting their faces.

Ciao McDonald's
In the southern Italian town of Altamura, Apulia, area citizens, supported by Italy's Slow Food movement, campaigned against a McDonald's development by establishing their own group "Friends of Cardoncello" (named after an Italian mushroom). Despite community opposition, McDonald's built a fast food store in town, but struggled for a few years, as townspeople's shunned the "golden arches" and supported the local baker and other community restaurants. In December '05, McDonald's closed its doors and left town.
