Subject: Anchorage is not a vegetarian friendly town
We lived here for 5 years (until 2007) and were always frustrated by the lack of options. There were only a handful of places we would want to eat out at which had more than one vege option.
Thai restaurants are always a good bet and usually have a vegetarian menu. There are only a couple mexican restaurants we found with a vegetarian beans. A couple Indian places. But that's about it. Downtown is particularly (disappointingly) void of vegetarian options. We were vegan when we first moved here, but predictably that disolved after a few years because it is incredibly difficult to be vegan in Alaska.
Subject: Vegetarian Restaurants
You can often find local vegetarian restaurants by looking for places that has yellow signs with red font that have the Thai characters for "Jai" on it.That looks like this: เจ
Occasionally these characters are in a Chinese font, making them look like a weird number "1" and backwards capital "F".
These are strict buddhist vegetarian restaurants with fake meat, no egg, no fish sauce, and no real meat. Sometimes it is chinese food but most of the time it is authentic Thai vegetarian food.
