Subject: General Notes
Unlike its neighbours Vietnam and Thailand, Cambodian cuisine is not spectacularly veg*n friendly, with seafood and barbecued meat forming the basis of most local dishes. However, in the major centres, most international restaurants have at least a few vegetarian (and occasionally vegan) offerings, and some Khmer restaurants offer veggie versions of local dishes (e.g. tofu amok - traditionally a seafood dish). Obtaining veg*n fare at street vendors, market stalls and most local restuarants is usually not possible without asking the vendors to adapt their normal dishes, and the result will most often be a simple meal of fried noodles with veg, fried rice with veg, or steamed rice with veg.

A few useful phrases:

K'nyom nyam m'hoab boo-ah = I eat vegetarian food (literally "food of monks")
Ot nyam ... tay = I do not eat ...
Soam kom dak ... = Please don't add ...
Saitch = meat
Tray = fish
Teuk tray = fish sauce
Prayng k'chawng = oyster sauce
Pra hoc = shrimp paste
Porng mow-un = egg
Teuk daw goa = milk
