More About Me

Reasons why I prefer to eat vegetarian or vegan:
I could have gone about my whole life staying desensitized, but luckily I read John Robbins' "Diet for a New America" when I was 19, which started me on a path to learn everything I could about the exploitation of animals for human consumption. I stopped eating land animals immediately, and several years and several books later (especially Gail Eisnitz's "Slaughterhouse"), I stopped eating (or wearing) anything that came from an animal. I just did not want to contribute to violence towards animals or people - violence I would never participate in directly. So when I became vegan, it was a very natural and joyful decision that has had many unexpected gifts.

I joined HappyCow Members Community because:
I have encountered so many wonderful people and places as a vegan, including HappyCow founder, Eric. Although I discuss many vegan places and experiences on my "Vegetarian Food for Thought" iTunes podcast, I want to share them with a larger audience. I want to contribute more information to help people support and educate businesses!

Here are some places I've been that I liked... and places that I would like to visit one day:
My heart belongs to Italy. My husband, David, and I named our home "Little Montali" after a very special stay at Country House Montali in Tavernelle di Panicale. I'm a total Anglophile, though, and David and I also love visiting the UK. Traveling is a big part of our lives, so our "visit one day" list is ever-expanding.

Some of my favorite veg*n foods include:
Kale!

Here are some books, movies, magazines, and my favorites that I would recommend to other HappyCow members:
My website, www.compassionatecook.com, and my Amazon store have a comprehensive list of health and animal rights readings and films. A few favorites follow: The book "Diet for a New America: How Your Food Choices Affect Your Health, Happiness and the Future of Life on Earth" by John Robbins; The book "Slaughterhouse: The Shocking Story of Greed, Neglect, and Inhumane Treatment Inside the U.S. Meat Industry" by Gail Eisnitz; The film "Au Hasard Balthazar" directed by Robert Bresson; The film "Umberto D." directed by Vittorio De Sica.
