More About Me

Reasons why I prefer to eat vegetarian or vegan:
I've been a vegetarian for so long (30 years) that I no longer consider meat to be food. It would be like eating shoes. I won't eat fake meat either. I do eat honey and dairy. I avoid eggs, but that is because I'm allergic to them. I believe that people & animals can live together but that we have to be much more loving in how we treat them, they are beings with minds and emotions. At the same time I want to eat food that doesn't exploit people, either. Farm workers and farm animals both need a lot more care and appreciation.

I joined HappyCow Members Community because:
I've used Happy Cow for years to find places to eat while I'm traveling & I realized that I should give something back to the site.

Here are some places I've been that I liked... and places that I would like to visit one day:
I love the area around Banff up in the Rockies, the south west of England, the north of Scotland, The north west of Iceland, the south of France, and Big Sur/Monterey in California. I would love to visit the South Pacific and the west of Africa!

Some of my favorite veg*n foods include:
Bean soups, whole wheat breads, salads, curries, minestrone, pastas rich in tomatoes and veggies, lentil shepherd's pie, and at the moment I can't get enough turnips. I put them in all sorts of things from soups to curries and they add serious oomph. I cook most of the food I eat.

Here are some books, movies, magazines, and my favorites that I would recommend to other HappyCow members:
I am just loving the amazing vegan cookbooks that are being published these days, I highly recommend books by Isa Chandra Moskowitz (esp Vegan With A Vengeance) and Jae Steele (esp Get It Ripe). Of the classics I love Anna Thomas & Rose Elliot, Julie Jordan & Moosewood. Another author to check out is Alice Waters - she is not a veg*n but she has a wonderful way with vegetables. The last time I ate at Chez Panisse I just asked them to bring me a big plate of vegetables (I didn't fancy any of the veg options on the menu) and I was in heaven. They were exquisite.
