Reasons why I prefer to eat vegetarian or vegan:
When I was 15, I spent a week on a farm in the Catskill Mountains. When I returned home, I just couldn't eat meat ever again after having spent time with so many animals. For me, even if an animal died naturally, I still couldn't bring myself to eat it. It just feels disgusting and disrespectful. For most of my vegetarian years, I didn't see anything wrong with eating animal products. I went vegan in 2010 after learning the truth about the egg and dairy industries and the harm they cause animals.
I joined HappyCow Members Community because:
I'm always interested in finding veggie restaurants and stores I don't know about, especially when I go to areas that are not as veggie-friendly!

When I first went vegetarian, since I was a teen, I didn't eat very healthy... a lot of French fries, onion rings, pasta, mac n cheese, etc. It took me a few years until I got into mock meats, as I had thought meat was gross most of my life anyway, so even the mock versions didn't really appeal to me. Eventually I got tired of my boring vegetarian diet (which was just due to me not knowing how to expand my horizons) and started eating a lot of mock meat. Nowadays, I am back to not really liking mock meat... or mock dairy, for that matter. I prefer unprocessed, healthy foods. I have a kale chip addiction! I do have a weakness for non-dairy ice cream, though.
