y coal sucks!
The proposed Pee-dee coal fired power plant is a hazard that is unnecessary in South Carolina. Through conservation practices and investment in renewables, the energy needs of South Carolina can be met!

Among the countless environmental and health concerns that accompany the pee-dee coal fired power plant lies the issue of coal ash dumping.

Coal ash is the concentration of chemicals in coal after it is burned. It is known to contain heavy metals and harmful substances like selenium, arsenic and mercury. The dumping of coal ash is often unregulated and is placed into unlined pits located precariously close to waterways and communities. Coal ash Dumps contaminate groundwater and bring various health and environmental issues to surrounding areas. The incidence of certain types of cancer greatly increase in areas polluted by coal ash dumps and the levels of arsenic in water near coal ash dumps in areas across South Carolina are significantly higher than federal limits! Excessive levels or arsenic are not the only problems from coal ash that South Carolina faces. According to a study by William Hopkins, at two separate locations of coal ash dumping in South Carolina, tadpoles had a 18% and 37% rate of spinal malformations while less than 5% in unpolluted locations. With out a doubt this provides irrefutable evidence that coal ash dumping has a significant negative impact on the environment and poses a great health risk to residents near these coal ash dumps.

I am twenty years old; I drove four hours to be here. I am here representing thousands of other youth in South Carolina who are saying: Coal is not the answer to South Carolina’s energy needs~ The dangers associated with coal extraction, processing, use and disposal are far too great for it to be considered as a source for our electricity. Take a look at the dirty facts behind the coal industry and then tell me that you want this coal plant in your back yard.
