Saving a whale shark from being kept in captivity
Dear Mothersson2002,
I read with interest in HappyCow that there’s a group that is helping animals in captivity.
I am a member of Facebook and I recently joined a group “Say NO to whale sharks in captivity”.
The purpose of the group is to create awareness amongst the global public and urge them to sign a petition to stop
a Singapore-based resort from going ahead with the plan to keep a whale shark in an aquarium.
There are around 1,000 members who joined the group, but unfortunately only around 300 have signed the petition.
And so I’m writing to you and your group asking you to help sign the petition, if you so wish, to help bring about this possibility.
Here are the basic information which I lifted from Facebook:
Basic Info of the
Type: Common Interest - Beliefs & Causes
Description: Whale sharks captured from the wild and displayed at the Integrated Resort Singapore for our entertainment!!!
NO WAY!
JOIN US in a petition appealing to Singapore authorities to prevent this from happening in Singapore! EVERY SIGNATURE COUNTS!

Recent News
Resorts World at Sentosa is offering family entertainment experiences such as Quest Marine Life Park an oceanarium spanning 8 hectares with the largest single marine tank in the world, a 6.5 million gallon Whale Shark Lagoon, and interactive dolphin habitat, operated by the world-renowned Dolphin Quest.
We believe it is cruel to keep whale sharks in captivity. The whale shark is a highly intelligent and sociable animal, has a migratory range of 13,000 km and can dive to 980 metres. Is it possible for any man made environment to cater to their requirements?
Recently “Ralph”, one of the whale sharks at the Georgia Aquarium Atlanta, died. ‘Norton’ another whale shark died five months later, proving that whale sharks are not meant for confinement to glass walls.
SPCA Press Release
Singapore, 30 August 2008
In conjunction with International Whale Shark Day1 on 30 August 2008, the Singapore Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is saying ‘NO’ to have whale sharks for Resorts World at Sentosa. Along with Nature Society (Singapore) and Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES), SPCA had voiced its strong objections when news was first announced that a whale shark was to be part of Genting’s International attraction (Forum page, Straits Times; 21 October 2006).

(unfortunately I can't attach this)
I hope that you can reach out to the members in your group - animal friends - to ask them to help sign the petition, I'd be most grateful. There's no need to donate any money when you're on the petition site.
Thank you.
Love and light, Pegasus2012
