Reasons why I prefer to eat vegetarian or vegan:
A diagnosis of MS put me on the path to making conscious, informed food (and lifestyle) choices, but the more I learned, the more I became aware that there are myriad reasons to be vegan and no reasons not to be. So I'm vegan because I love my critter friends and don't want to contribute to their suffering, exploitation and slaughter; because I want to practice compassion; because I love the Earth and Nature and to the extent possible I don't want to participate in its damage or destruction; because I don't want to waste resources; because I care about the world's hungry; and because I care about my own well-being, health and peace of mind. And because it's a delicious, satisfying and gratifying way to live!

I joined HappyCow Members Community because:
I've found Happy Cow to be a very helpful resource for planning trips, and always enjoy meeting (or just knowing about) other vegans and all who aspire to live a more conscious and compassionate life. I find the stories of their personal journeys interesting, often uplifting and always inspiring.

Here are some places I've been that I liked... and places that I would like to visit one day:
I love New England, especially in Autumn (I used to live there), the highlands of Scotland and Costa Rica (I'm always drawn to mountains!), Devon and the Cotswolds in England. I enjoy the towns of Red Lodge, Montana, Taos, New Mexico and Ann Arbor, Michigan, and for organic vegan dining I especially enjoy my visits to California! Someday I really want to visit Italy, especially Tuscany where my grandfather came from. There are a lot of places I'd love to visit, but Italy, Ireland, Austria, New Zealand and the Caribbean are the top five.

Some of my favorite veg*n foods include:
Organic whole foods, especially tomatoes straight from the garden, broccoli, asparagus, berries, avocados (and guac!), chickpeas, quinoa, potatoes, tempeh, sea veggies, my homemade marinara sauce, rustic and whole grain breads (especially kalamata olive bread) and bruschetta, hummus, portobello and shiitake mushrooms, and baba ganoush (which I think is as much fun to say as it is to eat!) :-)

Here are some books, movies, magazines, and my favorites that I would recommend to other HappyCow members:
For anyone open to learning about veganism, I always recommend "The Food Revolution" by John Robbins, "The Vegan Sourcebook" by Joanne Stepaniak, "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell, PhD, and/or "Mad Cowboy" or "No More Bull!" by Howard Lyman (whose very straightforward yet humorous books especially resonate with men, in my experience), along with the FatFreeVegan and Dr. McDougall's web sites. Other favorite books of mine include "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, "Your Heart's Desire" by Sonia Choquette, and "Last Chance to See" by Douglas Adams. My favorite movies include "Baraka," "Moonstruck," "Planes, Trains & Automobiles," "Babe," "Sixth Sense," "My Cousin Vinny," "Sacred Planet," "The Green Mile," "A Fish Called Wanda," "Thelma & Louise," "The Bear," "The Red Violin," "Love, Actually," and "Waking Ned Devine." VegNews, of course! Only magazine we subscribe to.
