New Vegetarian
February 12, 2011 09:23PM
Hi all, I made the switch to vegetarian 2 weeks ago, although I was thinking about it for some time before I did it. In my immediate family, I am the only vegetarian, but my uncle is one and has been for many years. I don't have any friends that are vegetarian (that I know of), so I'm really just looking for some support.

Hello,
Welcome. It can be difficult not knowing many vegetarians! I get support online and I love reading Vegnews magazine. It makes me feel not so alone in this! For me, it is most difficult at work. Listening to others talk about meat, especially around the holidays. Well, if you have any questions, let me know! Sue

Congratulations for becoming a vegetarian! I know it's not easy alone, my story is similar to yours (except for your uncle). Sometimes it's even more difficult than being alone, since some people around you will question or challenge your choice, or you might have to make unpleasant small decision for example when you are with a group of friends who want to go dining to a steak-house... But those moments actually give you a way to understand better and reinforce your motivation.

I became vegetarian 5 or 6 years ago and vegan last year. The only thing I regret is not having done it earlier! But without anybody vegetarian around me at any moment of my life, that was maybe not possible.

Good luck! I heard NYC is a great place for being vegetarian or vegan. Feel free to ask specific questions.

Hi, same here. It can be difficult when you don't know of anybody who is vegeterian. None of my family and friends are vegeterian either but don't be put of by that. Some people aren't very understandable and don't see why people lead a vegeterian lifestyle but the people on happy cow are very supportive.
Congratulations on going veggie and keep it up.!! grinning smiley

I know I am super late, but welcome! It's nice to have support from others such as yourself who have problems being accepted in their family after making such a compassionate decision.

Unfortunately for me, I am the only Vegetarian on both sides of my family, so I am looked at as if I'm crazy or weird. Go figure.
