I thought it would be fun to introduce my almost one year old to Mickey and so bought a Disney music CD for the car. It's so catchy and I love it. They Might Be Giants do some of the songs. Very fun. But there is one song that disturbs me: I really love picnics! And it goes on and on about the fun things about picnics, including EATING HOT DOGS ON THE BUN. Sigh. I love the song but detest hearing over and over about Goofy eating hot dogs. LOL
What is a veg mama to do?

Did anyone ever come up with a list of veggie loving, animal compassionate story books for small children? I don't want to preach to him, but I would like that subtle influence.

Yes! There is a great blog that covers veg kids books and movies - [vegbooks.org]. It's run by a person that's on a veg parenting Yahoo! group I'm on. Too bad they don't review or suggest kids music too. Maybe I'll have to mention that.

Animal products pop up in so many unexpected places. DS has several alphabet toys and books that show E being for eggs. This is fine, except that they often show fried eggs. He finds this somewhat confusing.

As far as the hotdogs song, since it is a favorite in general,perhaps the term vegetarian hotdogs could be emphasized as they are a legitimate type of hotdog right. The song doesn't specially state meat hotdogs right. I suggested that a lot to my son.

I found a very veggie friendly story in the most unlikely of places...A "Little Golden Book" called "The Tawny Scrawny Lion." It's old, you might have to find it at a second hand store, but it's about a Lion who's hungry all the time, scares off the other animals coz he's always trying to eat them, befriends a bunny so he can be taken home to meet (and then eat) the bunny's nine chubby brothers and sisters, then discovers the joys of eating bowl after bowl of carrot stew and stops trying to eat the other animals! Very veggie, and probably not intentional (I'm pretty sure this book came out in the '50's or 60's or so). It was my husband's fave book when he was a kid, and we picked it up at a Goodwill I think, and it became one of my daughter's favourite books!
