what about ice cream?!?!
February 15, 2011 04:41PM
I've been a vegetarian for about 15 years but have finally decided to make the move to vegan. I have two questions for anyone that would be kind enough to give me their input. I tried almond milk in my coffee and it curdled.....any suggestions, I love my coffee and would miss it terribly but don't like it black.
Also, I personally think that ice cream should be it's own food group!! I love the stuff and am not sure if I could go the rest of my life without it happily. LOL But can anyone suggest a vegan alternative that's really, really close?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Hazelnut milk is fantastic in coffee, and if you want something creamier (and have a local health food store that carries it) MimiCream is awesome! As for ice cream, try the ones made with coconut milk, but you'll probably have the best luck getting some recipes and making your own. I make awesome milk shakes using a raw cashew base, but I haven't found a vegan vanilla ice cream at the store that's creamy like the original. I recommend trying chocolate peanut butter and other flavors that are more decadent and have their own personality, so you're not looking for that dairy-like flavor in the plain ice cream. Also, your tastes will change, so give them a chance to adjust. Hope this helps.

Hi Mrsferg!! Welcome to the world of compassionate lifestyles! smiling smiley Silk actually makes a vegan soy creamer; it comes in hazlenut, vanilla and "regular." That's what I use because I like a little coffee with my creamer. As for the ice cream, have you tried Rice Dream? Tofutti makes a good "ice cream" as well. Personally, I'm addicted to sorbet which is vegan. Good luck to you!! I'm so proud that you've gone all the way. smiling smiley

P.S. Angela's right. Your taste buds will adapt. My biggest struggle was giving up cheese, but now that I have, I don't even like the taste of "real" cheese. There are always fabulous alternatives!! smiling smiley

hi everyone! I'm new to Vegan Chicks. I had to jump in b/c who doesn't love talking about ice cream?!

The other day I discovered the most incredible vegan ice cream bars in the universe. Has anyone tried these? They're called Tempt ice cream bars and they come in a bunch of flavors: Vanilla with Blueberry, Pomegranate Swirls, Chocolate Fudge, Coffee with Cream Swirls and Vanilla with Fudge Swirls. I had the Chocolate Fudge and it was one of those moments where you just cannot control yourself. You finish and you reach in that box for another bar. I can't describe how amazing they are, just try them.

Also, Tempt is made from hemp so it's a nice break from the regular soy, almond, coconut milk routine. Tempt also makes hempmilk and regular non-dairy icecream so you may recognize the name from that.

Hands down the best creamer for coffee on the market is Wildwood's Soy Creamer. it is so amazing even my non-veg boyfriend drinks nothing else with his coffee but this creamer. You must try it...I swear it will not disappoint.

I am an ice cream fanatic. My favorite ice cream is Luna & Larry's Coconut Bliss. It is coconut based but most flavors do not taste like coconut. My second favorite is So Licious Purely Decadent. Also the So Licious Ice Cream bars are good too.

Peel and cut into pieces a few bananas a put in the freezer overnight or until whenever frozen.

Put them in the blender and add a minimum of either: water, coconut milk, soy milk, almond milk- this is almost nothing, just enough for the bananas to blend well and it should not make it liquidish.

I add a few drops of vanilla but this is optional.

Don´t add sugar or any sweetening.

Blend until the right texture (not too much!). You got banana ice-cream!!

You can add chopped nuts, or dates, or chocolate chips or blueberries or strawberries or shredded coconut or whatever you like.

Oh! You should blend this right before eating, I´m not sure you can store it again, maybe you can but haven´t tried it. And you should add whatever you chopped and wanted to add after blended and mix in as the amount of time you blend should only depend on what the bananas need and not the rest of the stuff, though shredded coconut and similar should be ok to blend together.

Let me know how it goes!!!!
