Hi to new members - introduce yourself!
April 22, 2008 08:54AM
Welcome to all new members

Feel free to introduce yourself on this thread! I'll make a start, as I started the group!

I'm Emma, from Brighton, and I've been vegetarian for 19 years. Since March 2009, I've been living in Madrid and working as an English teacher. Back in the UK, I have a great circle of friends, mostly veggie, and a beautiful rescued cat. Living in Spain is an interesting vegetarian challenge!

My main passions in life are animals, travel and tennis. I've got a bit of a penchant for 80s music too!

So - who are you and what are you all about?!

Em x

Hi,

I joined here last week, but I might as well make an intro for the board! tongue sticking out smiley

My real name is Amanda, I am 22 years old (will be 23 this December coming so I am Sagittaruis).
I went Vegan over 4 Months ago, it started off slower, I mean, maybe the first week I had a lot to learn and was more Vegetarian. I was watching a lot of videos on animal abuse, etc, and it horrified, angered and hurt me.
I would love to know more about good Vegan products and companys that sell them, even stores, and that's why I am here...And to just generally talk about veganism.
Like I said in my last thread in this group, I don't have many vegan stores or foods i know of round here.

So more about me.... (Read my profile too)....
I did enjoy meat most of my life, till i watched some slaughteres in UK places, it was awful. . .
I am glad I am off animal products, I did think it would be hard at first because I grew up with these products!

So anyway feel free to ask me anything, i gotta go........Nerd

Hello! I'm 25 and live in London... which is great for me as there's so much choice for vegans and veggies. I love this site - it's a great supplement to the Vegan Society one.

I joined up mainly for a bit of support though really! I was vegan for a year and then lapsed... Now picking it all back up but I need a lot of pushing!

Hello everyone. I'm Hector. Been vegetarian for 8 years now with a few vegan moments mixed in there. I found this website through another vegetarian friend and decided to give it a try. I travel a great deal and keeping variety in my daily diet is tough given the places I go. I saw a lot of references and tips on this site, so here I am.

Cheers,

Hi! I'm Kelly, I'm 26 and I live in Reading (with my veggie boyfriend and rescue cat).

I've been veggie for 13 years. I joined this site because I find it can be quite hard to meet people with the same views as me. I'm shocked that I still get people who just don't understand how or why I've chosen to restrict my diet in this way ("Vegetarian? You still eat fish though right? What about chickens, they're stupid. Cows? They wouldn't even exist if we didn't breed them to eat them!"winking smiley.

In terms of places to eat near me, there's not so much choice for eating out. We have one vegetarian Indian restaurant, which is awesome, but that's about it. I go to Brighton (wish I could afford to live there!) and London quite a lot instead.

Interests? I like rock music (particularly punk), spending time with my friends, walking and I've recently got into gardening (I realise that's not very cool!)

So, that's me. Hi.

Hi Guys,

I am missing London - my dinner was Mutabal & salad in a Lebanese restaurant in the Bietry district of Ab*djan City - quite a way to the south.

If you have a few minutes please take a look at the London pages & correct any mistakes that you see - I have blitzed them over the past weeks - they are "ready" for flood's of new business listings.

Today I sent a couple more in to HappyCow - My Village in Camden - the Iraqi / Kurdistani veg cafe & Zelda's Pod a great organic / Fairtrade store in Hackney / Islington - they will appear on the site in a few days once the American dude's have time to list them.

Veggy businesses need support / promotion.

Be happy & have a great weekend !

Y's.

Hi,

I live in Essex at the moment but will be moving back into the smoke soon to start a 4 year degree in nutrition and health. I am 43 years old and have been vegan for approx. 18 years now. I joined this site some time back for support and a chance to contact like minded people. My interests include music, reading, cooking and jogging (Run this years London Marathon, 2008, with the vegan runners vest on).

Please check my profile for more info or ask as i am always willing to answer questions.

Cheers

Hi, everyone.

I live in Plymouth with my non-veggie partner, Phil, and my rescued cat Susie. I've been veggie for upwards of 35 years and I love cooking and investigating new flavours. I also enjoy walking and living here in the south west is simply wonderful. My other passion is music - particularly jazz and blues. In a previous life I played clarinet in a jazz band.
Nowadays, summer especially, I seem to spend a lot (sometimes too much) time entertaining friends and relations from other parts of the country. I don't really mind; at least I get to take my holidays off-peak. This year we are going to explore Ross-shire. Is anyone familiar with this part of Scotland? Any Tips?

Cheers
Lyn.

Hello everybody!

I'm a 24 year old student in Manchester (old for a student, I know). I live with my wonderful fianc? whom I got engaged to last month and I couldn't be happier!

I've been a vegetarian for around four years now, and I'm toying with becoming vegan. It's pretty hard for me as a cheese-lover, but I'm sure I would have said a similar thing about meat when I was younger. Any tips and suggestions about making the passage to veganism easier will be greatly appreciated!

I'm into rock and punk and go to as many gigs as my wallet will let me. Manchester is a great place for a vegetarian punk rocker like me with plenty of gigs, loads of veggie cafes and my favourite cegetarian restauraunt in the world at the end of my street!

Cheers,

Ian

Hii!
I'm Sophie, Elizabeth's just my middle name, but it sounds abit more interesting than just "Sophie".
Anyway, both my parents are veggie, therefore so am i.
I want to take it one step further though and become vegan.
I don't think this would be too difficult anyway, considering i have gone off cheese, and i never drink milk.

craig, i've been veggie for about 20yrs. i enjoy travelling and thank happy cow several times each year.
i live with my much better half, and was in glasgow until last year when we move through east. quite lucky here with the tourist trade allowing a few veggie places to survive, but would love a south east asian/chinese veggie place to open up!!!!!
as you can see from my profile i like football and 9 times out of ten, the response i get after telling people is, you are never vegetarian. must be the ipa!

Hello there
I'm Chris and I've been vegan for 13 or 14 years and veggie for a few before that. I live just outside of Nottingham with my partner, Andrea. I'm quite lucky in that there is a decent variety of vegan friendly places to eat in the area.
I look after trees in my job and ride amy mountain bike for fun (up to the point where I fall off!).
Happycow has been really good in helping plan our trip to Vancouver (we're going on 30th May for two weeks!) and I'd love to hear from anyone who has been there and has any advice or tips on where to go and what to see etc.

A couple of people have asked for advice on going vegan. I'd say look for a couple of recipie books with good, straight forward dishes ( some recipie books can be very complex with all manner of unusual ingredients) and start from therea It's all good!

Cheers, Chrissmiling smiley

Hi I'm Gabi and I live in Belfast in the Northern Ireland. I'm recently seperated, I work for the government and have two dogs, a dobi and a lurcher. Have no pc at home and hope never to give into it (never say never eh?) so will just be browsing at lunchtimes. Hi

I've used Happy Cow for searches for some time, but only noticed the community recently (I'm quite heavily involved on the excellent Volentia site).

I've been veggie for 27 years and took the Vegan Campaigns Vegan Pledge in January. I've attended a few veg*n Meetups, organised a Volentia meal in London (holding more), been on some campaigns and hope to attend more soon (ie. Farmed Animals March on October 2nd).

Do check out my profile on Volentia (you'll also find me on the UK and London groups, etc.), VeggiePlaces, Health Ranger/Natural News, etc.

Hi, and welcome, Richard

Thanks for your comments. I'd never heard of Volentia but I've just been over to it and have signed up. Looks interesting.

How's it going being vegan?

Hi Emma, sorry, I never received notification of your reply, hence my very late response (we did connect via my profile... and I messaged you on Volentia, but I don't believe you replied).

I'm still vegan, after almost 2 years, with no intention of ever going back to vegetarianism, next step more raw food (and Fruitarian Fridays?!) :-)

Hoping to marry my vegan girlfriend this March (we met via Volentia and the 'local' veg groups), I recently held an event for all my single veg chums (about 100), where I proposed to her :-)

My New Year's resolution is to get all the veg*n groups to co-operate/merge, so we're a force to be reckoned with (Volentia has 46,000+ 'Likes' on Farcebook, 15,000+ actual members worldwide) ;-)

(Check out some stats, for numbers of vegans around the world, to see that we've got some way to go to get everyone aboard, and there are millions of veggies)

P.S. I've clicked on 'Email me about replies to this topic', fingers crossed!

Hey all smiling smiley

I'm Hannah, I'm 20 and I (mostly) live in Lancaster, apart from holidays when I'm at home near Slough winking smiley

I've been a vegetarian since I was 15, but I slip up occasionally and eat fish when I'm at home with my parents as they have a very old fashioned view of vegetarianism where fish doesn't count confused smiley I feel guilty and just eat it.

ANYWAY I'm trying to cut more animal products out of my diet and go vegan (at least for a trial period) this year... All is well as my parents bought me 'Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World' for Christmas!

I love reading, being theatrical, collecting recipe books and all things metal. I'm also an absolute geek and I game a lot.
Re: Hi to new members - introduce yourself!

Welcome Hannah

Well done on 5 years of vegetarianism (well, with the fishy slip-ups!) - parents/grandparents seem to regularly be the guilty parties when it comes to these things.

My grandmother could never rememer what I did or didn't eat - we did eventually settle on the "nothing with a face" explanation, although that confused the issue when I explained that I didn't eat seafood either!

It sounds like your parents might at least be coming to terms with it properly now, given your Christmas present and also, I guess, the fact that you've stuck to it for 5 years. As far as the guilt issue is concerned, I'd be inclined to point out that you would actually feel far more guilty for actually eating the fish, than for sticking to your guns even if it confuses/upsets them.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the group and do keep posting.

Happy New Year.

Hi all
My name's Ania and I decided to go vegan 4 weeks ago. I have always been very much aware of animal cruelty so it only made sense to go vegan. No transition period or gradual cutting down. Just stopped all animal products smiling smiley I think that's the best way - I've done the same with smoking before so I guess cold turkey is the best method for me haha
Anyway I live in Durham with my hubby and 2 amazing little monsters - cats- Basi 9 month old siamese and George 3 year old black and white rescued kitty smiling smiley
I love this website so I will be visiting often smiling smiley

I'm lucky enough to have been vegetarian my whole life and would never change it, other than to perhaps become closer to a vegan, especially when I am reminded about the conditions cows endure in order to provide us with milk.

I'm so excited to find that there are vegetarian communities out there over the world, it's so good to know there are millions of us. It is especially great to have support and advice when travelling to somewhere like Spain (which I do, regularly) where it is very difficult to be vegetarian, never mind vegan.

I live in South West London but my parents are in North West London and I have just discovered an amazing looking vegetarian pizza restaurant (www.karmafreepizza.com) through this site which I can't wait to try out soon!

Hi Shobhana

Great to have you here. I know exactly what you mean about Spain. I lived in Madrid for 18 months and it was a bit of a minefield. The veggie food, when I found it, was gorgeous but it was a real battle sometimes. Not least because I didn't know before I went there that they don't class ham (jamon Serrano particularly) as meat. It's a food group all of its own. So even after I'd mastered saying "I don't eat meat, fish or seafood", they would still offer (and sometimes bring) ham. They were truly staggered when I said I didn't eat that either!

I've heard of KarmaFreePizza and would love to try it sometime when I'm in London.

I know a lot of veggies would like to become vegan, or closer to it, but plenty more who are quite happy sticking with vegetarianism. There's a lot to think about.

Emma
Re: Hi to new members - introduce yourself!

I've done a bit of research on Spanish veg restaurants and it looks like Madrid has a few, but unfortunately we are way down south - Vera Playa in the province of Almeria. I must admit I've never been offered ham as a vegetarian option, but it is pretty dire trying to eat something nice in this region. However, in Mojacar, near to our town, we have some British expat cafes and bars, luckily there's one or two who occasionally have a vegetarian burger to offer.

When I'm really fed up with the usual pizza or omelette I sometimes go for an Indian instead because they'll always have dhal and curried vegetables, so you still get a well balanced meal without having to overload on cheese. I have found plenty of Indian restaurants around, surprisingly.

I find it easiest to start on the vegan pathway when things are settled and in a routine at home. I then have time to think and plan out my food each week and work out what I want to buy to ensure my diet is properly balanced. I am very big on balanced diets - I believe in trying to minimise your carbohydrates and keep your fat and protein levels up, and this has worked really well for me in the past.
Re: Hi to new members - introduce yourself!
January 15, 2013 03:23PM
There were 4 or 5 vegetarian restaurants in Madrid when I lived there but none were cheap. I lived on tortilla, pimientos and huevos rotos con patatas most of the time. Well, actually, most of the time I cooked at home so it was fine!

There was a whole area of Madrid with plenty of Indian restaurants so that was always a good option, though no doubt no good for vegans due to all the ghee.

Do get to The Karma Free Pizza Company soon as owner Shyam, and his sister Saloni who co-owns it, are looking to sell up, so it might not remain veg*n.

For info on that, and more on veg pizzas, see Volentia's pizza lovers group.
