New to Texas!
August 03, 2011 05:07PM
Hi fellow animal lovers!!

I just recently moved from Michigan to the Houston, Texas area and am looking for different organizations and groups to get involved with (I'm also desperately looking for a job so any suggestions for my area is MOST appreciated) spinning smiley sticking its tongue out I was an active member for the Michigan Humane Society and am still apart of Humane Society of the United States as well as World Wildlife Fund.

Anyone in the Houston area that knows a group, animal shelter, etc. that needs could use a member or volunteer? I only know a few people in the area and none of which are vegetarian so this forum is such a breath of fresh air!! I was feeling really silly the other day walking around Texas in my 'Vegetarians Have More Fun' bunny shirt. *blush* However, I am completely honest when I say, the friendliest people I have met or run into so far have been in the pet food isles at the stores! Guess it makes since right? haha

Can't wait to connect with fellow kindred spirits!

Hi there BobbiLeah! Welcome to Houston. Hope you can survive this hot summer temps!

I would agree with revruss, Vegan Society of Peace is a great organisation to join and volunteer with. Kristin is the founder/president and she is a real force of nature (and delightful to boot!). I am sure if you attend one of their events and talk with them, you will find a great bunch of folks and opportunities.

Also, Vegan Outreach is always looking for college/university and event volunteers. Check out their webpage at veganoutreach.org or http://adoptacollege.org/.

Lastly, please take this as my personal invitation to attend the Sunday Feast at the Hare Krishna Cultural Center. It's free, pure vegetarian Indian-style food prepared and served to all who show up (and ALL are welcome). The food is served at 7:15pm each and every Sunday, plus there is a great musical performance at 7pm in the temple room, along with a lecture or presentation at 6:15pm. Feel free to stop by, listen, chill-out and enjoy the food. And please ask for David, for I would love to meet you and welcome you with a free gift! The address is 1320 W. 34th St, Houston, TX 77018 (maplink)

Hope you get a great job soon and best wishes!
