To me veg-nism directly relates to spirituality. It is not a diet, it is a way of thinking, if living , and is an attempt to change this world as well. Most spiritual traditions talk about compassion and love toward ALL living beings. Ahimsa/compassion is universal.
I study Christian Science: Considering the Scientific Statement of being:
There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual.

Well if God is all and all then why can sentient beings be killed. Well, one may ask why can plants be consumed then. The bible states that The first is Genesis 1:29-30, which states, "And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. 30And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, where-in there is life, I have given every green herb for meat; and it was so." So plants although necessary are to be consumed by all sentient beings. Thus "thou shall not kill" commandment (Exodus 20:13; Deuteronomy 5:17) applies to all sentient beings.
This SO reminds me of our beautiful lawns....growing with the richest of 'weed's which are really the appropriate medicines for our regions. We are given ALL we need...and yet, there is such gluttony that people think they have to eat each other!! We are ALL one!!
