Earth Hour

Make Earth Hour Happen

It started with a question: How can we inspire people to take action on climate change?
The answer: Ask the people of Sydney to turn off their lights for one hour.

On 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour - sending a powerful national and global message that it is possible to take action on global warming.

This massive collective effort reduced Sydney's energy consumption by 10.2% for one hour, which is the equivalent effect of taking 48,000 cars off the road for one hour.
With Sydney icons like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House turning their lights off, and unique events such as weddings by candlelight, the world took notice.

All households, communities and business around the world are being invited to turn their lights off for one hour at 8pm on March 29 2008 as Earth Hour goes global.
Towns and cities around the world will be taking a stand on the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, and millions of people will unite to turn the tide on global warming.

Pledge to turn out your lights for one hour and it’s as simple as that.

This is great! I think saving energy to a lot of people is like voting. They don't see how their small changes can make a big difference. Once you put it together like this I think people notice a lot more! I will definitely be joining this!

So, what did you do during Earth Hour?

I had lots to work on and cleaning to do, so I decided to focus on organizing my closet with a small light so I could see what I was doing. I think my dog must have thought I was crazy!

yeah, that was very cool that Google was involved. they have the power to make great things happen and it's awesome that they're interested in these things.
i heard thru the grapevine that they also have 3 vegan restaurants on their campus and may soon also be promoting raw - vegan food in some way.

about earth hour, has anyone heard any news about the result of it? did we save a bunch of resources or what??

Probably not Eric.
Taiwan powered off, then during the lights out celebrated with a parade of deisel and gas guzzling trucks buses and cars, driving around town honking and flashing lights in celebration.
Ironic isn't it!!

For me the main point of Earth Hour was the sign of solidarity. That we are all in this together and united we can make a difference!
More a symbolism than anything else.
I'm sure there's figures and facts on the website.
