Going vegan but not going vegan
July 06, 2011 08:23AM
Hey vegetarians and vegans! I`ve been a vegetarian for 2 years and i`m a little vegan. I dont eat cheese, eggs, and I dont drink milk. I could hardly beleive it when I found out eating cheese supports the veal industry! I want to go vegan, but the budget does`nt allow it. I would go vegan but I think it would be too much on my mom. The place we shop at does`nt have alternatives. I`m new to this discussion board, and there are no vegetarians or vegans in my family. I really wish everyone in my family was vegan. Anyway I hope I can meet some new pple to talk to on here and to comment on each others posts. ttyl.

Out of curiosity, what is it you eat that isn't vegan, since you say you are vegetarian and don't eat cheese, eggs or milk? Even if you can't perfectly eliminate every single animal by-product out of your life (which, truthfully, is more or less impossible in this world as it exists today), meat, eggs and dairy are the big three. Eliminating just those things from your diet means that virtually none of your food money is going to support animal agriculture. That's more than just a little vegan, IMHO.

Maybe it's different shopping for a family but for me personally I found saving money to be a unintended consequence of my new dietary choices. Of course I went from fast food/truckstop food to shopping for vegan choices at a grocery store. But I recently noticed I was spending less. Perhaps try getting your mom to just buy more vegetables that the whole family can enjoy then you just abstain from the meat, dairy and eggs and your mom won't have spend extra.

Hi there,

Have you tried some of the butter alternatives like Earth Balance? You'll never need butter again. Really.

Dark chocolate is your friend. You can easily find some good vegan chocolate out there. (don't tell anyone but I stash vegan chocolate chips in my desk drawer at work)

And processed foods, well.... not sure what to tell you on that one. What kind of stuff are you eating that's processed? I bet we can find you some good alternatives!

If you live in Canada, Becel maragarine has a new vegan maragarine that is much cheaper than Earth Balance and available in regular grocery stores. As for processed foods I would suggest learning to bake vegan. You could try ordering vegan chocolate alternatives such as go max go chocolate bars online at veganessentials.com, no matter where you live. I also was vegetarian for two years before becoming vegan in a small town with no vegan resources, so you just need to persevere and ignore your family. Also, I found learning to cook for myself made me less reliant on my non-vegan family when I was a teenager.
