I'm going to try veganism for 30 days to see how it goes. I've been a vegetarian for 7 years. Any tips about food in the pantry must--haves or anything?
Also, I'm looking for vegetarian dog food, but everything out there is really expensive. I have 2 large greyhounds so
they go through 20# pretty quickly. Any thoughts?
I was vegetarian for several decades. Went vegan cold turkey one day and never looked back... Best thing I ever did... for the animals, and for me... Supreme health benefits. My osteoarthritis completey disappeared after going vegan. Now I understand that it is because dairy is an inflammatory.
I think it's probably an easier transition for a vegetarian, than an omnivore. When it comes to vegan there are limitless possibilities, so it depends on what kinds of food you like to eat, or if you like "traditional" meals and are looking for faux meats/cheeses, or are changing to baking without eggs, etc.
I highly recommend the book "Becoming Vegan," by Brenda Davis.
Do you like to cook??? Hate to cook??? Like simple foods??? I think that raw food vegan is the healthiest diet, but people usually go vegan before taking this step.
It helps to have a vegan friendly grocer, like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's, but you can also find your way around any grocery store. I prefer to eat simply myself... but have to cook for a family that likes "traditional" foods.
One of the hardest things for my kids to give up was cheese. But Daiya cheese is really good substitute. It was easy for them to give up cow's milk--they like vanilla soy milk or chocolate almond milk.
If you are used to eating eggs, tofu scrambles are easy to make... Nuts are good sources of protein and you can make "French toast" by blending cashews and soy milk in a blender for the batter (with a little cinamon).
My dog doesn't eat dry food. He eats the PetGuard vegetarian in a can. If your dogs are used to eating a meat based food you have to change gradually. Mix some veg food with what they are eating now and put less and less of the meat-based food in the mix.
My dog does like "Cloud Star" Molasses flavor Buddy Biscuits as treats. I put a little peanut butter on them for him. He also likes Peanut Butter Crunch "Bark Bars (shaped as cats and postmen). I have a smaller dog.
