How is your transition to vegetarianism going?

Since this is a group in transition, I would like to know how you're doing? What pitfalls have you endured? How are old friends being educated and have you been able to make new friends?

I'm a total newbie and so far I'm just figuring it out. I'm kinda lost, but I will prevail. However, if I don't throw down some yummy meals, I'm afaid that my family may balk.

Don't forget that this group is NOT about transitioning to vegetarianism, rather it is about transitioning from vegetarians to vegans. That certainly doesn't mean you need to leave the group, I just wanted to make sure you understood what the real purpose of the group and discussion is about.

My transition to be vegan has been very slow. I've been vegetarian for about 30 years I think, but going vegan has been hard - I think mostly so because I have no support around me. I am surrounded in every direction by meat-eaters. I seem to be able to go mostly vegan at home, but going to restaurants is REALLY hard.

I think where you live can make a big difference. I lived in CA for 20 years and this would have been much easier there. Now I live in the "cornbelt" of the midwest and it is much more of a challenge....but I will persist!

If you are struggling to just become a vegetarian, what worked for ME was seeing pictures of what the factory farms are like and due to that, I stopped eating meat cold turkey and never looked back. If I would feel tempted, then I would just remind myself of the horrendous life the factory farm animals lived - that was MY motivation to quit. I think you have to really contemplate what YOUR main reason for being a vegetarian is first (health, compassion for animals, environment, your significant other is veg, etc.) and then look at the other side.
