Would love your input...
February 22, 2010 09:41AM
2 friends of mine and I have started a new website - www.thegreenurbanite.com - trying to reach out to people who want to live more healthy and sustainable lives. I was a fairly hardcore vegetarian for 18 years and Sara, who is one of the co-founders, is a fairly strict vegetarian. I'm also a certifed chef who spent a number of years cooking all sorts of food.

My question to you is why do you choose to be a vegetarian? What would you like to see happen to your immediate world through your own actions?

I really would appreciate any answers you would be willling to give.

I have dabbled in vegetarianism for years, but never really made the true conversion until I had an epiphany this past November. I had been surfing the internet and came across Heather Mills website where she had a video of what goes on in the fur trading industry. It was just awful and upset me. I began to search the internet more and found a gambit of websites that discuss the cruelty of factory farming and I also discovered that many of our foods have been genetically modified. The fast food industry along with the over processed foods sold on the grocery shelves are destroying our health. Diabetes runs rampant in my family along with heart disease. Around the same time that I was looking into the factory farming and fur trading industries, I also discovered that I had diabetes and high cholesterol. My own poor health was beginning to erode due to horrible dietary habits. I purchased several good books... The China Study, Dr Dean Ornish books for reversing heart disease, books by John Robbins, The Kind Life etc.. etc.. I began to educate myself. It was as if I was standing in a dark room and someone turned the light on where I could finally see for the first time. Once I realized the truth, it was a no brainer for me. I knew I had to make some changes in my life.

Within the first month of becoming Vegan, my cholesterol dropped from 240 to 180. Today it is 150! My HgA1C dropped from a 9.7 to a 6.1 and I have never felt healthier!! I have joined several websites and I'm taking a course on good nutrition and weight loss from "The Vegan Coach" as well as following the principals taught by The China Study and the PCRM. I drink a green smoothie daily and my skin has cleared up, I have the energy of a 16 year old and I am receiving complements from people around me that I look great!

I am currently starting a website called The Vegetarian Cooking Club and have begin to form my own Vegetaria group here within my own community, as we really don't have any support in this area. I am spreading the good news to whoever will listen.

I am very proud of my lifestyle now because I am also contributing to a better world.

Peace out,

Hi Angela,

In response to your post; I have been a vegatarian for close to 15 years mostly for environmental reasons however I have recently become vegan as I have been more educated on animal rights and the FDA - that was my choice for going vegan. Not to mention I am a mother now and hold my childrens best interest close to my heart - eating natural, unprocessed food is one of those interests. To sum it up - I believe we should eat locally and eat a kind diet.

I hope this helps.....
