jesus and meat
July 11, 2011 07:20PM
I don`t beleive that animals were put on this earth to eat, but I do beleive that Jesus is perfect. Why did he eat meat? This confuses me all the time. What do you think?

At least two veggie Theologians (C.J. Cadoux and Andrew Linzey) have inclined to the view that Luke: 18-19 suggests Jesus was not perfect in the everyday sense. Or as independent scholar Jon Wynne-Tyson has remarked 'the feet of a messiah tread just as heavily on the worm as yours or mine'.

It probably isn't possible to live a perfect mortal life and 'sins of omission' (eg Jesus' lack of condemnation of slavery) have had consequences over many centuries!

I explored the wider subject (or rather summarised the insights of published veggie priests and vicars) in a booklet back in 1998 which was issued by the Fellowship of Life in the UK.

Maybe we shouldn't concede too much to modern day Christian meat eaters and stay focused on present circumstances/simple tenets of the Gospel; rather than allow specific problems to loom larger than life..?

Hope that helps

Hi! Jesus may not have been perfect as Neonlitz stated, but He was certainly without sin. I don't know of any instance where the Bible specifically states that Jesus ate meat as we know it. I know that He fed the people fish but nowhere does it state He actually ate with them. The Bible does reference "meat," but perhaps this is merely a way of saying food in general and not specifically the flesh of animals. The Garden of Eden was the epitome of a healthy and abundant perfect diet. I do not believe God created animals for us to eat but rather, after the flood, He gave Noah and his family "permission" to eat animal flesh because He had destroyed all plant life. I believe it was a temporary permitted act.

I don't believe that Jesus ever ate meat, but I could be wrong. I just can't picture Him doing this, though of course He clearly associated with meat-eaters. I suggest reading the FAQs section on the very helpful website, www.jesusveg.com. The questions and answers there helped me to feel better about this issue, and hopefully they will help others as well.

this is my best answer smiling smiley

Isa 7:14Therefore the Lord himself will give youc a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. 15He will eat curds and honey when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right.

IMO its really irrelevant because Jesus would never eat the flesh of tortured beings. So what He did then vs what He would do now, two different things. Weather Jesus ate fish or not isn't the issue, the issue is our treatment of animals in this century.

"What would Jesus do?"

Well He created us as Vegans: Genesis 1:29-31 29And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb producing seed that is on the whole earth, and every tree in which is the fruit of a tree producing seed: it shall be food for you

I have 2 blogs on this topic well on Christianity and Veganism smiling smiley

Hi all, I’m new and may be out-of-line; but, I felt compelled to respond. I am a logical thinker and became (mostly) Vegan (eat as a vegan) because of the science of it; I’ve been convinced that meat is not healthy for us.

With that said: I think of it as the same way divorce was permitted. God hates divorce, but because of the stubbornness of us human, he gave permission (in specific circumstances.) We are permitted to eat meat, but we don't have to. I say "don't have to" because I think that it's not a sin to eat meat.

I watched Earthlings (the documentary) with a friend, because she wanted to see the emotional side for becoming a vegan. I was outraged by the lack of respect for other living beings (the beasts we are to care for); but if it were only this movie, I would have decided to raise my own beef/poultry.

God is VERY forgiving; but as the saying goes, "when (He) gives an inch, we take a mile."

I have not gone to any of the links provided yet (well, I went to one), but I have looked over the Hallelujah Diet site and don't quite agree that eating meat is a sin. I will, as I can, look over the sites/links posted and consider what they say about being a Christian and eating meat. BTW, thank you all for posting them.

My prayer is that we may continue to look to our perfect Lord, seeking His will and true truth.

BTW, Jesus had to be perfect to atone for our sins on the cross. If we think differently, we aren't thinking properly.

Live Coram Deo,
Dustin
