I'd point out the differences between the world in Jesus' time and the world now. For one, did people in ancient Israel suffer from obesity? The way I see it, meat was more of a necessity then. Now, considering all the vegetarian options that exist, people are simply gluttons.

I suggest that you read the book Animal Gospel by Andrew Linzey. Also check out the Vegetarians and Vegans Group at Catholic Answers Forums. You do not have to be Catholic to join. There are a lot of good, educated Christians in this group that can help you to understand how the Bible supports your choice of vegetarianism. [forums.catholic.com]

Another book: Vegetarian Christian Saints: Mystics, Ascetics & Monks by Dr. Holly Roberts, can give you some ammunition when people chose to argue with you about your choice. There are 150 saints and others listed in this book. Some people choose vegetarianism or veganism because they care for the plight of animals, some choose it for purely health reasons--but whatever your reasoning for choosing this life style/diet you are apt to discover the spiritual rewards. Many spiritual persons have chosen this path.

This site may be helpful:[www.all-creatures.org]
"In Eden, all creatures lived peacefully, and God told both humans and animals to consume only plant foods (Gen. 1:29?31). Several prophecies, such as Isaiah 11:6?9, foresee a return to this vegetarian world, where the wolf, lamb, lion, cow, bear, snake, and little child all coexist peacefully" [www.all-creatures.org].

I get so tired having to defend myself all the time. Most people won't even open their minds a little. When asked why I used to answer 'because I love animals and don't want them to suffer', apparently farm animals aren't animals, just meat and milk machines, so then I answer 'because I don't want any animal to suffer, you won't eat a cat, I won't eat a cow, so I just took not eating animals one step further' There really isn't a way to convince someone you are right if they won't even consider the reasons you do this.
I know in the Bible people ate meat, but they didn't do factory farming, I believe most Christians who ate meat took good care of their animals, because true Christians are compassionate about both humans and animals. But now we just leave the dealing with the living animals part to other people, who are cruel, uncaring and not kind and we just go into a butchery or supermarket and buy ground up or cut up flesh without thinking of where it came from and how horribly someone suffered for us to eat it. All the omnis I know just say that they just prefer to not think about it.
I don't understand why or even how people can be so ignorant. Have they no hearts? And the worst omni moment in my life was when I was petting a cow once, I looked into her big, brown eyes, there was so much trust there, and she licked my hand. And this man standing next to me says to me ' I bet that would make a very good piece of steak' I felt sick. He couldn't for a moment see her for her beauty. I want to own cows and on the day they arrive, I'm gonna look into those big, trusting eyes and promise them that as long as I live they will never have to suffer pain or fear. And they will be loved.

There is a religious Jewish group called The Essenes that existed since the time of Jesus. The Essenes believe that Jesus was actually a vegetarian.
"The students had also to take the Nazarite vow not to eat meat or drink fermented drinks anymore. The Master said that, if a human being ate meat, he could not receive his word. This discipline was, at the same time, for both the external side and the internal side of life. The Master taught that physical vegetarianism had to be coupled with psychic vegetarianism, an attitude of inner life filled with a living morality, an active pacifism, a tenacious and serene will, a clarity and openness of mind".

Well, of course I agree with you, mothersson2002--but people will argue that thou shall not kill applies only to humans. Christians who eat meat will quote all kinds of things from the Bible and take it out of context. People will say that Jesus ate meat. I think Jesus would be abhorred at what's going on TODAY in intensive confinement agribusiness--factory farming.

This did bother me a LOT when I was growing up, and even into young adulthood, especially since I was raised in a Southern, fundamentalist Christian family in which I was the only one trying to become a vegetarian. Now, though, I see very few family members other than my mom and stepdad, and my mom is no longer the slightest bit critical of my vegetarian diet. I just never meet anyone anymore who says absurd things like, "But God made animals for us to eat," so this problem that once was so big for me has, thankfully, vanished!

I just found this website. I'm really, really, really going to like it here. :-)
This is a reply to an old post, but just had to say YES, it IS a problem. It's so hard when people say things implying a "true" Christian would accept meat as something the Lord gave us for food and expected us to eat. This, of course, is like pointing a finger at you and saying you're not Christian, period.
All my life, I did not like meat. I knew it came from an ANIMAL. Someone ALIVE once, who had to suffer and bleed for that "meal". My parents used to roll their eyes and fight with me to finish what was on my plate. So, being vegetarian isn't surprising to my family, but I'm still questioned and met with resistance.
And, frankly, now that I am older and know the TRUTH of factory farming, etc... there is an even deeper conscience involved. I CAN'T bring myself to eat it at all now. I can't stand the smell of it, even.
