can someone tell me where there is a (relatively) larger community of vegetarian or vegan people in australia?i'd like to move for a few years but this is an important factor, especially for my daughter, who would like to meet other vego kids.

Yes there are a few groups. I am from Sydney. There is the NSW Vegan Society (www.vegansocietynsw.com) who have monthly dinners in Sydney. There is www.meetup.com which has a Sydney Vegan and Raw Food meetup group which have raw picnics (also through www.gaiastable.com.au) and a Sydney Vegetarian/Vegan meetup group. There is an Australian Vegan Parents group on www.yahoo.com which are having a get together this month I believe in Sydney (Newtown), to join their mailing list just join on yahoo. They have a mix of young babies to older children and include members from all over Australia.

In Melbourne there is a parent's/families group that get together once a month. They are listed on www.vnv.org.au or at least on their newsletters for when & where. There is a Vegans Unite group in Melbourne that meetup for dinners also on www.vnv.org.au. VNV has a fabulous website for vegetarians and vegans and is entirely volunteer run.

In Brisbane there is a group through the Queensland Vegetarian Society that meets up regularly around Gold Coast and Brisbane (http://www.vegsoc.org.au/calendar.asp)

In Adelaide there appears to be... [www.adelaidevegans.org] or [www.vegsa.org.au]

There are annual vegan expos/festivals in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

Anyone know of any others?

Khity has given your the best answer! Ppl say Melbourne is Australia's vegan capital but I like to think Sydney is catching up.

There seem to be lots of groups in Sydney/Melbourne but I am sure you would find a vegan group in any major city.

You will find most services for veg*ns in the three major cities: Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. I travel a lot and i've never heard anyone but Melburnians call Melbourne the vegan capital of Australia (and what does that mean anyway?). You will find a lot of Sydney-Melbourne rivalry in Australia that is just so boring. Anyhow, I would think the South East Queensland-Northern NSW region would have the largest number of vegetarians/vegans per head of population. And actually smaller towns like Byron bay, Mullumbimby, Murwillumbah, etc, within the northern NSW region in particular are known for their veg*n-friendly communities, as is the city of the Gold Coast, particularly Burleigh Heads. Hobart is another smaller city with plenty of veg*n eateries and probably an associated community because of the big Green movement there (I'm not the type to seek out locale-based communities so i wouldn't know: I have veg*n friends all around Australia and beyond). So you will probably find most services and communities in big cities by number but by head of population you will get a better deal in some areas like the towns i've mentioned. :-)
