Coping with Thanksgiving...the mass killing of Turkeys
November 25, 2008 08:26PM
Hi All,
So how is everyone dealing with Thanksgiving this year. As for me, I am going to try that Tofurkey they sell at Sprouts. Of course you really don't need to substitute the meat since there is SOOOOO much food to eat on Thanksgiving anyhow.
But I thought I would try it this year.
Anyone had it before?

Also family can be really critical this time of year. I always say, "I don't push my eating style on you...give me the same respect"

Hi, I'm new to this group, and wanted to reply to your Tofurkey post, even though Thanksgiving is over. I'm curious what you thought of it. I had a bad experience a few years ago with some Tofurkey, and I cannot touch it now. I do still quite enjoy their turkey sandwich slices, however, which Trader Joe's typically carries.

Having been a vegetarian for almost 20 years, my family is long over their initial confusion as to why I would give up meat, although my mother still frets a bit each year that I won't have enough to eat... and each year I simply remind her that the dozens of sides will be more than sufficient! She even makes me my own batch of stuffing, baked in a casserole dish instead of inside the big dead bird. I'm also married to a Nebraskan-raised, burger-loving meat-aholic, so he appreciates the fact that we eat with my family for the holidays. He's seen Tofurkey, and it scared him. smiling smiley

Hi Tarathemis,
Well no I actually did not get the Tofurky. I heard it was good, but I don't really go for meat substitutes all that much. So after reading about your experience, I guess I made the right choice, lol.
Ya , my family is used to me as well, and actually my 21 year old son is also a vegetarian. My daughter who is 25 doesn't eat much meat, she sticks to poultry.
I appreciate when people who don't think they can take to the veggie lifestyle, at least cut down on their meat intake.
That funny about your husband, my husband appreciates any opportunity for meat as well. Though he really likes my veggie dishes.

My favorite is brown rice and miso with veggies. Miso is awesome! I never appreciated the benefits until just recently.

PS My only real temptations during the holidays is Egg Nog, but there is a great substitue in Rice Nog!
