Yeah, it's amazing the cruelty and ignorance the human race is capable of. I think most people would rather bury their head in the sand like an ostrich than think about and take action to stop factory farming and similar abuses. Anyway, you're not alone in experiencing that and you've come to the right place.
I have met more activists in person (as opposed to on-line) through Peta than through anywhere else. My advice is to sign up for their action team. They will contact you when there are events in your area. Then go to those events. Everyone there will be someone near your area, meet them then meet their friends and you're set!
