To be honest! I have no vegan frinds here! kinda sad T_T

Well, they (my meat-eater friends ) are just fine that I'm a vegan. The problem is my family. I'm the only vegan in my family.

What I don't like, vegeterianism here is always linked to religion. so when someone knows that we already become a vegetarian, they will questioning why it happens. and they'll see you a bit different. like something is wrong with us. Well I don't say all...

If so, please write some reviews when you have a chance smiling smiley
Does you family give you a hard time too? must be difficult... anyhow, you are very welcome on HappyCow, no judgement here. Hope you make lots of friends here. If you introduce yourself, and your group you will make some connections. Have you been in the chat room at all?
See you there maybe.

Hello, My name is Sabina. I am from Canada.
Re: Who We Are?
May 31, 2008 04:29PM

My name is Heathyr. I've been a vegan for almost nine years now, but I've never had a community of people like me to be a part of. I've recently come to realize that I need one... constantly being surrounded by people who not only don't care about the things I do, but actually mock and criticize them is much more emotionally exhausting than it used to be for some reason. So, it's great for me to be a part of the Happy Cow community!

Also, here are some links I'd like to share with all of you, in case you've not come across them before:

www.veganfreakradio.com (hilarious, poignant, and straightforward commentary on vegan world affairs ;-)
[peacefulprairie.blogspot.com] (a beautiful letter that perfectly characterizes the vegan outlook, in my opinion)

Thank you all for being here!

Poor those people to talk like that to vegan. Well, until now, no one has ever said that to me. But I do have arguments few times when talking about veganism and the animals.

Jus let those people say what they want. I wish one day those people will realize about what have they said.

Hello, Im J.
I recently became a vegan and I was curious as to how everyone does it. I dont mean how everyone as given up animals and animal products (that was the easy part). I wanted to know how people do it without becoming sick. Although I have not developed any health problems, my parents are concerned that I will. To please them, I promised I would research more than I already have. Anybody have any recommendations?

hey, I'm a NZ 12 year old vegan.

I don't know any vegetarians my age, let alone vegans, so that's why I joined HappyCow!

NZs made rich and famous for selling animal products so veganism is considered quite weird. My friends are OK with it (they way I see it if they're gonna give me crap about my diet they're not friends) and I convinced my Mum to go veg, but not vegan.
Re: Who We Are?
November 04, 2008 10:32AM
I know how hard it can be to make friends when u are vegan. It doesn't make sense and shouldn't really matter but it does to some people.

I thought I was the only one too but found out that some people just didn't know how to be vegans so I started to teach my friends about it and soon we became a little group of vegans.

anyway, welcome to the farm.

Hello, I'm Maija. I'd been vegetarian for a while but I just recently starting following a vegan diet. I always am being bombarded with questions by friends and relatives about the nutritional aspects of this lifestyle. A lot of people don't care or understand where vegans are coming from and just assume it's completley unhealthy and weird. It's nice to find a place like Happy Cow.

Hello. My name is Jessica and I live in Vancouver, WA. Right across the river from Portland, OR. I am the only one in my family that is vegan. I have a 17 year old daughter that has the desire but not the willpower! My husband is all about the meat and potatos!!!! It is really hard. Everything I make is "fake crap". We fight over whether or not our 7 year old is getting everything he needs and of course he wants (and gets) dads food. My mother told me the other day that I "am getting weirder all the time". Got to love your family right?! Anyway, I am very excited to be a part of this group. It will be so nice to converse with people who don't think I am insane.
Welcome jcringan
November 29, 2008 02:42PM
I hope that you will find the support u need to keep going.

My father was very upset with me when i declared myself as 100% vegan. He stop talking to me for months and told everyone that I was rejecting him. Eventually we reconciled our differences.
When I went raw for a year and bought all clean plates and utensils that's when my family thought I went crazy! But I never felt better I ran a marathon that year training on all raw foods.
Your family wouldn't know the benefits of this lifestyle until they give it a try. My mother is able to control her diabetes by eating several vegetarian dishes and my sister lost most of her weight this way too.
So, be patient with them, don't give up and they will come around.

good luck

I am a vegetarian and I have slowly changed the family over to a vege diet at home.
The kids love Indian vege food mung dhal is a favorite.

My parents are meat and three veges, mum does not like vegetarian food much but dad loves the Indian food and asks for mung dhal every time he visits.

Our meat eating friends have stopped inviting us over as they dish up the meat and we only eat the veges. We dont mind missing out on the meat but it does upset some people.

We live in Australia and have such a wide range of fresh fruit and veges. We are lucky lots of fresh air and a outdoor life style.

Hi I'm Mary, I'm new to the Happy Cow group. I am Vegan, have been for a year now, was a vegetarian for 6 months prior to that.

People around me just don't understand why I chose this lifestyle, it seems like I always have to defend myself. When I get introduced to someone new, I get introduced sarcastically as this is Mary, she's vegan! I get alot of people telling me that I need a big juicy steak. People are always trying to get me to eat meat, and that really bothers me. Does anyone else have this issue?

I logged on after being away to find that the Australian Vegans that I joined mid last year has disappeared....anyhoo I've joined this group now hoping to meet fellow vegans from far and wide..I'm Polly from Australia and concede that I went back to dairy while I was away but now I'm back to my no dairy policy, its amazing how well I feel, I found it really hard to give up milk and cheese but my tummy is thanking me and all the dairy cows are thanking me (I hope....I live in dairy farming country!!) I tried soy milk but all the controversy has left me thinking that I might leave it alone also my naturopath says its not that good for you in its highly processed form so I have found that Vitasoy rice milks are a good substitute especially the one fortified with chick peas...can't taste them but it does make the milk a little creamier....keep in touch....Peace.
Re: Who We Are?
February 15, 2009 08:41PM
Welcome Polly. We are glad to have a new member in our pasture.

I have since tried rice milk myself, but prefer the almond milk and trying the new oat milk as well. I have made homemade almond milk, but sometimes it's a little time consuming.
Re: Who We Are?
February 15, 2009 08:45PM
If ur interested this is a recipe that I follow to make homemade almond milk from my friends at the Living and Raw foods. Enjoy!

Raw Vanilla Almond Milk

1 cup soaked almonds
(Soak in a bowl in the refrigerator overnight and rinse before using)
3 cups water
1 vanilla bean, seeds scooped out
3-5 soft pitted dates (or soak hard dates in water for 1/2 hour) or
other sweetener to taste such as honey or stevia

To make raw almond milk blend the soaked almonds with the water until smooth. Then strain the mixture through a sprout bag, cheesecloth, or strainer into a big bowl. Save the almond pulp in a container and put in the refrigerator for later use.

Put the almond milk back into the blender carafe and blend in the vanilla seeds and dates or other sweetener until smooth. This milk will last in the refrigerator for about 3-5 days. Shake well before using. Variation: Blend in a banana and use a pinch of nutmeg to make a festive rawnog.

hi, my name is charmayne, i'm a british-australian living in macau. smiling smiley
it has been a bit difficult to find any vegan places.. so i have mainly been cooking here at home :-). there seem to be veg dishes around but mostly here vegetables are cooked in broth so they're not really veggie dishes. tofu can be a problem too as it is made with fish and/or milk when processed before it gets to the restaurant.
so finding the happycow website has made my life so much easier grinning smiley. i was going to have to starve!.
i am so happy now! :-))

Hello, I'm Jenn. I'm twenty-eight years old. I found Happy Cow by Googling "famous vegetarians/vegans". I was pleasantly surprised to find there is a community here. I'm a member of a few veg. groups on other sites, but they're plagued with trolls who like to post stuff like, "HAHAHA I just ate a steak! Vegans are unhealthy!!!!" so it's great to be surrounded by like-minded people.

I first started transitioning to the vegetarian lifestyle about ten years ago, first cutting beef out of my diet. I gradually worked up to chicken, then fish. I'm now doing my research so that I can transition to vegan. So far I have already cut a lot of animal by-products out of my diet simply trying to eat healthier. My biggest challenge is cheese, but I'm getting there.

I hope to learn a lot from everyone here.

Yea I had some pretty bad experiences with people say mean stuff about veggie-heads, but come to find out that in history many people found that we were destined to become vegetarians. There is 553 famous people listed on our blog of famous veggie-heads and still growing.

Glad to hear u r doing your research there is a lot of sources connected to this website and if u don't find what your looking for be sure to ask because 99.9% of the time we can find it for u.

We here to support so don't be afraid to share your journey with us.

hi jenn the last thing i gave up before becoming vegan was cheese i was a cheddar addict from childhood but then i realised that everytime i ate cheese my body rebelled (bad stomach aches, diarhea, horrid coating on the top of my mouth) we didnt have any vegan cheeses where we lived back then which was good because i started substituting avocado or just going without so i kind of lost the craving for it now i find the thought of eating cheese kind of repulsive.

hi ive been vegan for 9 yrs and still love it and am learning new things everyday
my partner and 5yr old son are also vegan. we cop a lot of 'discussion' about our diet from meat eaters as well as that well asked question "what the hell does a vegan eat?'
have found that most meat eaters are only trying to get a rise out of you and that if you dont react they soon back off or even become genuinely curious have also realised that the best way to influence people is to serve them up some delicious vegan food. its hard to argue against something that your stomach is loving
Re: Who We Are?

i'm 23yrs old girl who has been veggie since i was born. the only animal product i used was milk but few years ago i gave it all up... i guess i was born with aversion toward all animal products and i have good excuse- my blood type A+ smiling smiley i guess i always knew that using animal's goods is wrong.
anyway, i enjoy cooking, trying new recipes and making new ones, discovering new tastes and i think that making food is real art.
i've never dated vegan boyfriend, i was raised in strictly carnivorous family and people around me usually refuse to respect my choice and mostly i don't have enough time and patience to explain all to everybody. so i just have a need to share some opinions and experiences with people who understand me. happy to find you smiling smiley

Hi, I'm Rachel from Ireland.
I have been a vegetarian from the age of 7 and just turned vegan. The reason for this is I love animals and think it's very cruel to harm them. I never believed that dairy and eggs were as cruel as they were until I watched the meet you meat video. After watching that I just completely gave them all up and I've never felt better. I thought I would have cravings because I loved cheese so much, but honestly I've not had 1, Yay!!
Being a vegan here is hard, people think you are strange, My mum, dad and a few close friends are cool about it. A lot of people said I was stupid or I will get sick, my bones will become weak bla bla bla, 1 friend said I was so unhealthy, I find this quite funny because out of all my friends I am the only one that doesn't get colds or flu (the last 1 I had I was 13 I'm now 22! honest) and I never get the bugs that are going around.
It's great to find this little community, and to speak to like minded people, I just wish I could move you all to Ireland!! Little farming Ireland wouldn't know what hit it! lol!

Thanks for reading,

Re: Who We Are?

I'm George and have been vegetarian for almost 20 years. My wife is vegan, and it was her health that caused her to become vegan. My daughter and I thought it would be easier if we all became vegetarian, so we did. We also eat almost only organic food - we have a large garden, and only buy organic in the grocery store. In restaurants we can't stick with organic, unfortunately. It will be great when we see more organic vegetarian restaurants!

I live in Orange County, California, which is just south of Los Angeles. Lots of vegetarian restaurants around, lots of great markets, etc. It makes it easy to be vegetarian and vegan. I also travel a lot, and have been to some places that also have tons of great vegetarian restaurants (Seattle, Portland, New York).

My wife recently gave up gluten. It is very difficult to be vegan, gluten-free, and organic. Lots of gluten free people are meat eaters, and lots of the gluten free packaged foods (flour, bread, etc.) isn't organic.

I hope to visit fairly often and get to know you all a bit better.
Re: Who We Are?
December 29, 2009 08:46PM
my sister in law is also gluten intolerant and we shop at different stores like Whole Foods and some specialty stores too. we recently found out that some of the powdered drink mixes contain wheat in it. so label reading is a must. also there are website that will list everything a product contains that may help her select brand names or organic products.
Re: Who We Are?
December 30, 2009 07:48AM
Thanks Rawie - Yes, we're reading ingredient labels even more thoroughly than we used to. It's interesting that wheat may be an ingredient in innocent appearing items like "spices" as wheat could be used to either suspend or bind ingredients. We're also sending e-mails to lots of companies asking them about their vague ingredients for our own information, asking them for better labeling practices, and asking them to make organic versions of their products. We usually get good responses.

Re: Who We Are?

OMG. i did raw for about 2-3 years i moved in with my sister in law and i returned to veggie... not even vegan. all my cravings came back. i am still trying to find a way to go raw. if u find a good method please share it on the forum page, i would love to try it.

i want to give excuses for not going all raw...and believe me i have lots of them...but in all honesty i don't know y.....i did the emotional review, the juicing, fasting, the energy cleansing, the minimalist, micro, everything that worked before...but i can't find the one thing that is keeping me from raw.

all of the benefits of more energy, feeling better, it helped my migraines, it was soooo beneficial ....

well, i hope u do go raw there lots of great recipes, and an FYI YouTube has lots of easy to do recipes.
Re: Who We Are?

Hey Everybody,

I'm Ryan from Montreal Canada...

My story into vegetarianism and veganism is actually kind of funny. To begin, I am a chef and that has made me a proud meat-eater. In fact, so much so, that when my ex-girlfriend announced that she wanted to go veg, I mocked her and made sure to have bacon cooking as often as possible to show her the wrong of her ways.

Needless to say, we eventually broke up (not because of the bacon and vegan thing, but it sure didn't help)

So, one day, my sister dragged me to a hot yoga class and treated me to a lunch at a vegan restaurant she really wanted to try. The place was/is called Aux Vivres and it was truly a fantastic meal. I felt great afterwards.

I was truly surprised that a vegan meal could be so tasty and so fufilling. It changed me. But, while I had a newfound respect for veganism, I was still unable to take the full plunge until...

One day, a friend brought over a documentary called Food Inc. It challenged me in a way I never thought I could be challenged. I then realized that if I was not a part of the solution, I was a part of the problem.

Today, I am a proud Vegan and happy to meet all of you...

I have never seen the movie but i have written several college papers on subject.

Hope you will take the time to explore the Moo pages and share some of your creations. I find that people who just turned vegan have the most creative recipes.

and welcome again to the pasture of happy cows!
Re: Who We Are?

Helloo! I am Laurel, 16, and I live in Ontario, Canada.

I've been vegetarian for 3 years, vegan for about 6 months. I became vegetarian for my 'love of animals', I guess I put a face to my meat. Also at the time, many of my friends were becoming vegetarian for their own reasons, so I guess that effected my decision. However I wasn't involved in the animal activist community.

One of my vegetarian friends was looking into veganism. We were talking about it and had a really interesting conversation. She said something about how she didn't think that we as humans had the right to be enslaving these animals for our own selfish reasons. I wanted to rebuke this, since i obviously felt a bit cornered and defensive but I couldn't. It really got me thinking. I decided to get informed and researched veganism. I downloaded some podcasts, one of them being Vegetarian food for thought by Colleen-Patrick Goudreau. This podcast changed me completely. I wondered why I hadn't gone vegan earlier. I immediately went vegan the next day.

I try to be involved in my community, though there are a small amount of vegans and I get asked countless questions. One of the best ways I've spread the word was baking for school events, putting a little vegan sticker on the container and some info. People always ask me for the recipes.

Being vegan has changed my life in many ways. Its effected everything I do. I feel more compassionate and connected to the earth, even though there is so much suffering happening.

Hello all,

I'm Daryle. I've been vegan since 10 December 09; lacto-ovo vegetarian for 13 years before that. I am a Chief Mass Communication Specialist in the US Navy with near 19 years of service and am currently deployed to Afghanistan. There are two other vegans that I know of here, both due to rotate back to the states soon.

I've learned many new recipes that I can't wait to get home and try. (Yes...I cook tongue sticking out smiley)

Que Pasa!

I'm not ready to introduce myself yet cos I wanna say something first. BIG UPS to everyone who is vegetarian/vegan. Much love to y'all on the real! A HUGE thank you to the people that created this site La Vaca Feliz(The Happy Cow), and for those of you that keep this site going. It is super cool knowing that there are so many of you out there. We so kick ass! grinning smiley Okay with that said my name is Jenny B. I'm out here in the USA...California to be exact. I am a vegan. If I may add a Mexican vegan! Yes I am very rare among my people. Hahaha! It's all good cos as time passes on I get more passionate about what I am doing. My money goes where it's deserved to organic stores and products. It's empowering knowing that I am one less consumer that buys any animal products.

Keep It Simple!

Right On! Mexican vegan are coming into style. I got most of my family to change some of the ways they eat. Suggesting alternative ways of cooking like changing types of oils or baking instead of deep frying. They may not be thinking of becoming vegans but it does make them think about eating more healthy. When my mom got diabetes it was a wake up call to lot of my family and friends.
We welcome u to our pasture and any suggestions that u may have.

Love the fraze La Vaca Feliz couldn't stop LOL.... and yes i agree we kick butt...grinning smiley

Muchas gracias! Thank you for the welcome wagon! LOL....yes La Vaca Feliz adds a little more flavor don't you think? It's even funnier when I tell people about this site and call it La Vaca Feliz and explain what it means. Everyone always gets a kick out of it. Hahaha! Saying it out loud again has me lol. Heh! Heh! I'm such a dork I know! You gotta love it! winking smiley

Hey Penguin - there's a good vegetarian Mexican restaurant in North Hollywood called Leonor's. My wife and I cook a lot of vegan Mexican foods at home - lots of meals that are based on rice, beans and veggie fajitas! What else do you need? We have an avocado tree that gives us an avocado a day almost all year long - so guacamole is always around. I never thought about what percentage of different cultures are vegetarian/vegan - but in my travels, I've noticed that some places have more options than others - which probably reflects on what percentage of the population is veggie. Oh ... and when I travel within the US, it's great to have a fast food chain like Chipotle around to get a veggie bowl, burrito or taco.

Hey all! I am Amber an American living in Z?rich, Switzerland with my German Husband. I am a new Vegetarian and slowly making the Vegan switch. I do live in Cheese Country so like I said slowlywinking smiley I was very interested in learning more about vegan baking. Does anyone know of any Europe English speaking vegan cooking classes (week or weekend-short classes)? Or if there is anyone in Z?rich who would like to meet up and cook let me know. I am new to Z?rich and really do not have any vegetarian or vegan friends here but I LOVE to cook and bake.

Hi everyone!

I'm Paul from Stockholm, Sweden. I've been a vegan for 16 years now.

I became a vegan for the animals' sake, but since then I've learned that a vegan life-style is also great for the environment and for your health and that veganism at a larger scale would also play a significant role in wiping out famine in the world.

I'm crazy about music and I love travelling. I also enjoy photography and film.

It's always nice to meet other vegans/animal rights advocates from around the world. I think we rock! smiling smiley

Rock on!

Hello all,

My name is Andy, I'm 40 and living in Hannover, Germany (Europe).
I've been a Vegetarian for 20 years now and a vegan since a half year. Unfortunately the rest of my family (my wife and 2 boys, 7 and 6 years old) are not into vegetarianism, although my wife has radically cut down on her meat and dairy intake recently for health reasons. This place seems great, and I am enthusiastic to have found it.

Best regards,

Hi, I'm Nina, on the eleventh of May 2005 I was eating pasta with meat and while I was eating, something just made me stop and look at the meat on my fork, and I just put down my fork and decided not to eat meat again. Later that day I was driving and saw this truck with cows on it, I stopped behind it and I looked into these big, brown eyes of this beautiful animal. And I saw her tears, she'd been crying, there were wet streaks down her face. She was so scared, probably abused in the process of getting her onto the truck and then falling around with her friends. On her way to die as horribly as her life must have been. And I had to ask why. Why would we do this to her and others like her?

We can just walk into any supermarket in our neighbourhood and find so many choices of so many foods to eat without having to cause suffering. I find it harder and harder to relate to people around me, there are so many videos now showing the suffering of animals and yet people will not be moved to change. They claim to care about animals, just maybe not enough.

Hi all, I am living in the Northern California area. I am a middle aged woman. I was a stay at home mom for years, but my kids are grown now. I was a vegetarian for 10 years and have been a vegan now for a year. I am happy with this choice. I feel much better. I finally gave up wheat and am gluten-free now for a month, too. I think it is good to continue eating as healthy as we can as well as doing the least harm we can, too. I still am non-violent about my lifestyle and accept people as they are. I work on having patience and tolerance, too. Take care all.

Welcome "iamvegannow' to our family of vegan, vegetarians, and rawies. I lived in Northern California and was supported by a wonderful community of non violent, raw foodies. though i only went raw for about two years it was an incredible breakthrough to my relationship with food and my perception with my way of life.

I am now in Southern California where my nieces and sister in law are living a gluten free life too. the girls have bad allergies with most gluten foods, products are only beginning to show up on the mainstream shelves but with Happy Cow and it's supporters many grocers are now carrying specialty items.

I am happy that you found us and decided to join.

good luck on your journey
Re: Who We Are?

I think that there are getting to be more and more vegetarians and vegans who are also gluten-free. This is such a difficult combination when eating out! Some of the gluten-free sites that list restaurants will list Dairy Queen as a gluten-free choice! YIKES! And, some vegetarian and vegan restaurants don't understand what gluten-free means (I find this most often in Asian restaurants, where there may be a language issue, although it's not uncommon almost anywhere).

It would be great if Happy Cow could lead the way in helping people find vegetarian and vegan restaurants that are also gluten free, and possible help restaurants understand what these terms really mean. What would it take to help make that happen? I'd be happy to help if I can.
Re: Who We Are?

It's people like you who help Happy Cow lead the way any information you can post for our cow community would be great!

helpful website for more information on Celiac Disease, Gluten free recipes and helpful grocery lists. Trader Joe's prints out all there products that are gluten free.

also there is The Gluten-Free Restaurant Awareness Program (GFRAP)

for Northern America

Awareness is the key and thank goodness for networking Happy Cow is listing helpful information and restaurants on it's website.
