Hi Vonny,

How's it going?? I'm Eric, living in California. What's it like being vegan in Jakarta? Do your friends accept it?

To be honest! I have no vegan frinds here! kinda sad T_T

Well, they (my meat-eater friends ) are just fine that I'm a vegan. The problem is my family. I'm the only vegan in my family.

What I don't like, vegeterianism here is always linked to religion. so when someone knows that we already become a vegetarian, they will questioning why it happens. and they'll see you a bit different. like something is wrong with us. Well I don't say all...

Hello,

My name is Heathyr. I've been a vegan for almost nine years now, but I've never had a community of people like me to be a part of. I've recently come to realize that I need one... constantly being surrounded by people who not only don't care about the things I do, but actually mock and criticize them is much more emotionally exhausting than it used to be for some reason. So, it's great for me to be a part of the Happy Cow community!

Also, here are some links I'd like to share with all of you, in case you've not come across them before:

www.veganfreakradio.com (hilarious, poignant, and straightforward commentary on vegan world affairs ;-)
[peacefulprairie.blogspot.com] (a beautiful letter that perfectly characterizes the vegan outlook, in my opinion)

Thank you all for being here!

Namaste,
Heathyr

Poor those people to talk like that to vegan. Well, until now, no one has ever said that to me. But I do have arguments few times when talking about veganism and the animals.

Jus let those people say what they want. I wish one day those people will realize about what have they said.

*cheers* Nikki! ;D anyway, welcome here!

Well, HI!!, My name is Christian A. Herrera, I am a vegan. I live in Imperial CA. I LOVE being part of Happycow. I have been a vegetarian for 1 year, and vegan for 2 years. I get critized for being vegan all the time at mildde school. It's tough, and they will realize that they were wrong one day. I am 13 Years old, and I am a Mexican, I speak two Lang. (Spanish, and English). But I love How my Vice Principal is a vegan too, ever since people knew that, very less people started bugging me about my diet. YUP! Like Grounded4Life said, She is the Vice Vegan, The VV, The Doulbe V, hehehehe! I am glad to join this group, and hope to meet some vegans!! GO VEGANS!!!!!!!

Hello, Im J.
I recently became a vegan and I was curious as to how everyone does it. I dont mean how everyone as given up animals and animal products (that was the easy part). I wanted to know how people do it without becoming sick. Although I have not developed any health problems, my parents are concerned that I will. To please them, I promised I would research more than I already have. Anybody have any recommendations?

hey, I'm a NZ 12 year old vegan.

I don't know any vegetarians my age, let alone vegans, so that's why I joined HappyCow!

NZs made rich and famous for selling animal products so veganism is considered quite weird. My friends are OK with it (they way I see it if they're gonna give me crap about my diet they're not friends) and I convinced my Mum to go veg, but not vegan.
Re: Who We Are?

Welcome.
I know how hard it can be to make friends when u are vegan. It doesn't make sense and shouldn't really matter but it does to some people.

I thought I was the only one too but found out that some people just didn't know how to be vegans so I started to teach my friends about it and soon we became a little group of vegans.

anyway, welcome to the farm.

Hello, I'm Maija. I'd been vegetarian for a while but I just recently starting following a vegan diet. I always am being bombarded with questions by friends and relatives about the nutritional aspects of this lifestyle. A lot of people don't care or understand where vegans are coming from and just assume it's completley unhealthy and weird. It's nice to find a place like Happy Cow.

Hello. My name is Jessica and I live in Vancouver, WA. Right across the river from Portland, OR. I am the only one in my family that is vegan. I have a 17 year old daughter that has the desire but not the willpower! My husband is all about the meat and potatos!!!! It is really hard. Everything I make is "fake crap". We fight over whether or not our 7 year old is getting everything he needs and of course he wants (and gets) dads food. My mother told me the other day that I "am getting weirder all the time". Got to love your family right?! Anyway, I am very excited to be a part of this group. It will be so nice to converse with people who don't think I am insane.
Welcome jcringan
November 29, 2008 02:42PM
I hope that you will find the support u need to keep going.

My father was very upset with me when i declared myself as 100% vegan. He stop talking to me for months and told everyone that I was rejecting him. Eventually we reconciled our differences.
When I went raw for a year and bought all clean plates and utensils that's when my family thought I went crazy! But I never felt better I ran a marathon that year training on all raw foods.
Your family wouldn't know the benefits of this lifestyle until they give it a try. My mother is able to control her diabetes by eating several vegetarian dishes and my sister lost most of her weight this way too.
So, be patient with them, don't give up and they will come around.

good luck

Hi
I am a vegetarian and I have slowly changed the family over to a vege diet at home.
The kids love Indian vege food mung dhal is a favorite.

My parents are meat and three veges, mum does not like vegetarian food much but dad loves the Indian food and asks for mung dhal every time he visits.

Our meat eating friends have stopped inviting us over as they dish up the meat and we only eat the veges. We dont mind missing out on the meat but it does upset some people.

We live in Australia and have such a wide range of fresh fruit and veges. We are lucky lots of fresh air and a outdoor life style.
Regards

I'm Francis and I'm from the Philippines.

same as most vegan folks. I'm the only vegan in my family but I met a lot of vege and vegans here in our country and I'm starting to make a lot of veg friends.

I'm an animal rights activists and it's fun speaking out for the animals. I'm really not an animal enthusiast but I love them because they're friends so friends do not hurt friendssmiling smiley

I'm all against to any form of violence so I respect all froms of life that are capable of feeling pain and suffering

Hi I'm Mary, I'm new to the Happy Cow group. I am Vegan, have been for a year now, was a vegetarian for 6 months prior to that.

People around me just don't understand why I chose this lifestyle, it seems like I always have to defend myself. When I get introduced to someone new, I get introduced sarcastically as this is Mary, she's vegan! I get alot of people telling me that I need a big juicy steak. People are always trying to get me to eat meat, and that really bothers me. Does anyone else have this issue?
Re: Who We Are?

I logged on after being away to find that the Australian Vegans that I joined mid last year has disappeared....anyhoo I've joined this group now hoping to meet fellow vegans from far and wide..I'm Polly from Australia and concede that I went back to dairy while I was away but now I'm back to my no dairy policy, its amazing how well I feel, I found it really hard to give up milk and cheese but my tummy is thanking me and all the dairy cows are thanking me (I hope....I live in dairy farming country!!) I tried soy milk but all the controversy has left me thinking that I might leave it alone also my naturopath says its not that good for you in its highly processed form so I have found that Vitasoy rice milks are a good substitute especially the one fortified with chick peas...can't taste them but it does make the milk a little creamier....keep in touch....Peace.
Re: Who We Are?
February 15, 2009 08:41PM
Welcome Polly. We are glad to have a new member in our pasture.

I have since tried rice milk myself, but prefer the almond milk and trying the new oat milk as well. I have made homemade almond milk, but sometimes it's a little time consuming.
Re: Who We Are?
February 15, 2009 08:45PM
If ur interested this is a recipe that I follow to make homemade almond milk from my friends at the Living and Raw foods. Enjoy!

Raw Vanilla Almond Milk

1 cup soaked almonds
(Soak in a bowl in the refrigerator overnight and rinse before using)
3 cups water
1 vanilla bean, seeds scooped out
3-5 soft pitted dates (or soak hard dates in water for 1/2 hour) or
other sweetener to taste such as honey or stevia

To make raw almond milk blend the soaked almonds with the water until smooth. Then strain the mixture through a sprout bag, cheesecloth, or strainer into a big bowl. Save the almond pulp in a container and put in the refrigerator for later use.

Put the almond milk back into the blender carafe and blend in the vanilla seeds and dates or other sweetener until smooth. This milk will last in the refrigerator for about 3-5 days. Shake well before using. Variation: Blend in a banana and use a pinch of nutmeg to make a festive rawnog.

hi, my name is charmayne, i'm a british-australian living in macau. smiling smiley
it has been a bit difficult to find any vegan places.. so i have mainly been cooking here at home :-). there seem to be veg dishes around but mostly here vegetables are cooked in broth so they're not really veggie dishes. tofu can be a problem too as it is made with fish and/or milk when processed before it gets to the restaurant.
so finding the happycow website has made my life so much easier grinning smiley. i was going to have to starve!.
hehe
i am so happy now! :-))

Hello, I'm Jenn. I'm twenty-eight years old. I found Happy Cow by Googling "famous vegetarians/vegans". I was pleasantly surprised to find there is a community here. I'm a member of a few veg. groups on other sites, but they're plagued with trolls who like to post stuff like, "HAHAHA I just ate a steak! Vegans are unhealthy!!!!" so it's great to be surrounded by like-minded people.

I first started transitioning to the vegetarian lifestyle about ten years ago, first cutting beef out of my diet. I gradually worked up to chicken, then fish. I'm now doing my research so that I can transition to vegan. So far I have already cut a lot of animal by-products out of my diet simply trying to eat healthier. My biggest challenge is cheese, but I'm getting there.

I hope to learn a lot from everyone here.

Welcome to the pasture!

Yea I had some pretty bad experiences with people say mean stuff about veggie-heads, but come to find out that in history many people found that we were destined to become vegetarians. There is 553 famous people listed on our blog of famous veggie-heads and still growing.

Glad to hear u r doing your research there is a lot of sources connected to this website and if u don't find what your looking for be sure to ask because 99.9% of the time we can find it for u.

We here to support so don't be afraid to share your journey with us.

hi jenn the last thing i gave up before becoming vegan was cheese i was a cheddar addict from childhood but then i realised that everytime i ate cheese my body rebelled (bad stomach aches, diarhea, horrid coating on the top of my mouth) we didnt have any vegan cheeses where we lived back then which was good because i started substituting avocado or just going without so i kind of lost the craving for it now i find the thought of eating cheese kind of repulsive.

hi ive been vegan for 9 yrs and still love it and am learning new things everyday
my partner and 5yr old son are also vegan. we cop a lot of 'discussion' about our diet from meat eaters as well as that well asked question "what the hell does a vegan eat?'
have found that most meat eaters are only trying to get a rise out of you and that if you dont react they soon back off or even become genuinely curious have also realised that the best way to influence people is to serve them up some delicious vegan food. its hard to argue against something that your stomach is loving

Hello...
i'm 23yrs old girl who has been veggie since i was born. the only animal product i used was milk but few years ago i gave it all up... i guess i was born with aversion toward all animal products and i have good excuse- my blood type A+ smiling smiley i guess i always knew that using animal's goods is wrong.
anyway, i enjoy cooking, trying new recipes and making new ones, discovering new tastes and i think that making food is real art.
i've never dated vegan boyfriend, i was raised in strictly carnivorous family and people around me usually refuse to respect my choice and mostly i don't have enough time and patience to explain all to everybody. so i just have a need to share some opinions and experiences with people who understand me. happy to find you smiling smiley

Hi, I'm Rachel from Ireland.
I have been a vegetarian from the age of 7 and just turned vegan. The reason for this is I love animals and think it's very cruel to harm them. I never believed that dairy and eggs were as cruel as they were until I watched the meet you meat video. After watching that I just completely gave them all up and I've never felt better. I thought I would have cravings because I loved cheese so much, but honestly I've not had 1, Yay!!
Being a vegan here is hard, people think you are strange, My mum, dad and a few close friends are cool about it. A lot of people said I was stupid or I will get sick, my bones will become weak bla bla bla, 1 friend said I was so unhealthy, I find this quite funny because out of all my friends I am the only one that doesn't get colds or flu (the last 1 I had I was 13 I'm now 22! honest) and I never get the bugs that are going around.
It's great to find this little community, and to speak to like minded people, I just wish I could move you all to Ireland!! Little farming Ireland wouldn't know what hit it! lol!

Thanks for reading,
XxXx
