Stanley Matthews is widely considered to be one of the greatest English footballers of all time. He was the first player ever to win the European Footballer of the Year and the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year Awards. Matthews played for Stoke City, Blackpool and England in a professional playing career that spanned 33 years (1932-65). He won the FA Cup in 1953 with Blackpool in a game still remembered as "the Matthews final". Matthews was a teetotal vegetarian whose health regime enabled him to keep playing professional football up to the age of 50. He also still holds the record for being the oldest player to ever play for England (making his final appearance for his country at age 42). He died in 2000 aged 85.
