Paramahansa Yogananda, born Mukunda Lal Ghosh, was an Indian yogi and spiritual guru. As a youth, Yogananda sought out the teaching of many sages and gurus. It was in 1910, the age of 17, that Yogananda met his guru, Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri.

Yogananda introduced many westerners to the teachings of meditation and Kriya Yoga through his book, Autobiography of a Yogi. He said, "The true basis of religion is not belief, but intuitive experience. Intuition is the soul’s power of knowing God. To know what religion is really all about, one must know God."

The main discipline of Yogananda's meditation teachings is Kriya Yoga, a set of yoga techniques. Today he has followers in India, the United States, and in other parts of the world.
