Living Vegan in Uppsala (& Sweden) (March 2009)
by Marion
Hello & welcome to Sweden/Uppsala!
"Life" is a health food store. You will be able to find vitamin B12 in the (Life) health food store, there are quite a lot of them around in Uppsala. The biggest one I have found is in the street Dragarbrunnsgaten. It's in between the river & the train station.
You can also go on to Google maps type in Sweden, then Uppsala, then you can finally type in: life once you have deleted Sweden & Uppsala from the search box. You will be able to find the location of them.
They sell vegan cheese called Sheese in mozzarella style, gouda style & strong cheddar style in large supermarkets as well as some of the the life stores in the fridge.I found tofu vegan butter & a dairy-free range ! (the brand is Carlshamn Mejeri it doesn't say it's vegan but I emailed them & they told me it was.)
Look out for mjolkfritt, meaning milk-free.
ICA (& Co-op)
Vegan Sheese can be found in large ICA supermarket in the same area as the dairy cheese. They also have slices of cheese brand : Tofutti (they are better for melting than the Sheese ones)
ICA has lots of organic fruit & veg & tofu the brand is kung markatta tofu it tastes ok (,for inexperienced tofu cooking of my standard)The basil flavored one is the best & there's plain & tofu flavored with soy sauce. You can also find rice cream for cooking, soy & rice milk. Alpro Soya yogurt & soy cream. They also have a large range of organic pulses & flax seeds for your omega 3. Another bonus is the "Yogi Tea" you can find there as well as in the life health food store. They also have quite a large range of nuts, nut & dried fruit mixtures. Most of these can be found in the Co-op.
*TIP*
Another thing I found useful for vegan/vegetarian travel is to check out Compassionate Cooks FREE podcast it's called "Food for thought". It has nutrition info, cooking tips & recipe ideas....

In a gallery in St Persgatan steet, they have the shop Lush some of their products have vegan certification ie:
They also have a magazine called Lush Times with the ingredients in English & some of the staff speak good English.
There also is a mini Indian supermarket opposite Musikens hus (Uppsala)/ You can buy vegan falafel (in a yellow box, powder form) there, they taste good, but are quite dry. Spices there are cheaper than in supermarkets.
A place to eat out is Grand, they have a vegan & vegetarian option.
