In Burgos, as in all Spanish cities and towns, there is a multitude of "fruterias," or small fruit and vegetable shops, all over the place. Just do a map search for "fruterias Burgos" and you will see at least a dozen in the very center of town. These shops tend to be frequented by locals, and are generally cheaper and have better quality produce than supermarkets. Most sell only fresh, seasonal produce, which is mostly of Spanish origin. Try the oranges in late winter and early spring, or the yellow plums in summer--they're fantastic!
These small shops are convenient for vegetarians or vegans traveling in Spain, in which vegetarianism is still a new concept. You could buy some fruit, bread, olives, cheese (if not vegan), and a bottle of good wine for dinner one night!
