As vegans, we were a little nervous about traveling to Hungary, a country known for its traditional cuisine centered around meat and dairy. We had absolutely nothing to fear, though. We stayed in Budapest at the Budaveg apartment, which I highly recommend. It's in a quiet residential area away from all the bustle of the tourist centers, but it's only a couple blocks from the metro, which makes it very easy to get everywhere you want to go. The price for the apartment in November was about 45$US each night for two of us - an incredible deal. The two restaurants I recommend most highly are Eden and Napfenyes. We barely ate anywhere else because the food at both establishments was so good. Fresh fruit abounds at corner shops even in the winter. Don't go to health food stores thinking they'll be like Whole Foods - most are extremely small and stocked with teas, vitamins, etc. They have some food (I fell in love with paprika puffed corn), but don't think you can eat entire meals based on what you buy there. Overall, it was a very positive experience. I can't wait to go back!
