Vistor Notes:
Subject: 'vegan in Crete'

I visited Crete with a Greek friend who is from Athens. Although the variety of food is somewhat limited, it can be very good! There are many veggies offered, and almost all are cooked in olive oil versus butter. Giant Beans are usually your best bet for non-animal protein, and are served at almost every restaurant. There are also MANY desserts that are vegan, as they typically use vegan chocolate for baking. Unfortunately, Cretans don't really understand the meaning of "vegan." My friend had to ask most people (in Greek) for foods that were okay for fasting, since traditionally Greeks fast by not eating any animal products. The best vegan food I found was in old town Chania at Tamam Tavern. Their Giant Beans and Risotto are both vegan, and are both AMAZING! The Third Eye restaurant has a great vibe, but is quite a drive if you aren't already staying in Paleochora.
