note
Turku, called Åbo in Swedish, is a city of 175 thousand inhabitants traversed by the beautiful Aura River. Almost everything is within walking distance. Universities, cheap available student apartments, spa facilities, vegan lunch restaurants, theatres in Swedish and Finnish, art museums, galleries, night clubs and much more are all within walking distance and from the city center you can take the bike as well as boats out to the spectacular Finnish archipelago.

Among the main attractions are the Cathedral of Turku located some 300 meters from a delicious vegan-friendly cafeteria as well as a vegan lunch restaurant, the Turku orthodox church (turku@ort.fi to contact the parish for participation) next to the main city square were they sell vegetables, Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art on the way to another vegan lunch restaurant, Turku Art Museum next to a bust of Lenin marking the place he visited on his way to St. Petersburg (there are train connections to St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Tampere) and finally Forum Marinum and Turku Castle close to the harbor were you can take the ferry to Stockholm via Mariehamn on the Swedish speaking island of Åland.

In the evening all vegetarian restaurants are closed. I can recommend the following restaurants to both vegetarians and vegans. Indima www.indima.fi , Delhi Darbar www.delhidarbar.fi and Sikhar www.sikhar.fi . You have to ask for vegan alternatives and all options are not on the menu. You can use English everywhere and in Delhi Darbar you can also use Swedish.

Turku is a European Capital of Culture 2011. For more information about Turku see www.turku.fi as well as this website.
