Making the Connection

Last week in our nation’s capital, the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) held a climate change conference focused on solutions to the problem of human-induced climate change. As mentioned in a previous post, the head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change—Rajendra Pachauri—emphasized the importance of making better lifestyle choices to help curb global warming. Most notably, he brought the concept of what we eat and it’s connection to our current climate dilemma to the masses.

It looks as though some officials are taking the matter to heart; All of the food served to the 3,000 attendees of the conference was vegan. In addition, brochures were presented at each table containing quotes from the U.N.’s revealing report on the meat industry, “Livestock’s Long Shadow”. It’s fantastic that this connection is finally getting the recognition it deserves. With the rising awareness of the global challenges we face in the years ahead, getting the public at large to accept this reality brings vegetarianism one step closer to the mainstream. Everyone can easily have a role in caring for the Earth—on a daily basis—without buying a new, expensive vehicle with lower miles per gallon.

More information on the conference can be found here.
