Travel notes: Taiwan is truly a vegetarian and vegan paradise -- from all-you-can-eat smorgasbords with hundreds of different dishes, to "small eats" at stands in the night markets, Taiwan features its own unique, varied cuisine as well as a full spectrum of international vegetarian delights.  There is also a growing public awareness regarding the benefits of organic produce, and natural foods restaurants featuring organic, wholesome vegetarian fare are springing up all over -- this movement has also led to a decrease in the use of additives such as MSG.  Taipei city alone has over 750 active vegetarian restaurants, according to the Taiwanese vegetarian resource site vegeworld.com.tw (Chinese only, unfortunately).  Vegetarian food in Taiwan is also predominantly vegan, as eggs are not considered vegetarian by Taiwanese Buddhists, and milk does not play a large role in most Taiwanese cooking.

Enough has been said here about how great a country Taiwan is for vegans. However, I am aware that it can be difficult for non-Chinese speaking people who are new to Taiwan, so I am putting together a blog on veganism in Taiwan: www.vegantaiwan.blogspot.com
It may take a while to get it up to a useful standard, however I am happy to answer questions on veganism in Taiwan in the meantime.

Subject: 'Learn the Word VEGETARIAN'

note
Have someone write the character for vegetarian in Chinese ('SU' with a forceful sound). Once you learn to recognize the character, you will be able to spot it out as all vegetarian food stalls & restaurants will have a sign with that character ('SU'). Vegans don't worry -- Taiwanese vegetarian is mostly vegan!

Taiwan is full of wonder. But you must get out of the big cities and explore the small villages & towns, and you will be greated by smiling & curious faces. Lots of yummy traditional foods, warm people, very earthy, and overall a beautiful island!

note
"Chur Su" in Taiwan is really easy as many people are buddhists. Most vegetarian restaurants are offer mostly vegan buffet-style/food-by-weight, and the choices are incredible and delicious!
