note
Downtown area of Takayama city has unique culture - although it is built with large influence of Kyoto town design and culture, it still has own cultural taste of mountainous range. People are not posh and sophisticated like in Kyoto, but homely and down-to-earth. Takayama is also famous for traditional culinary art, and the restaurants and hotels are basically vegetarian friendly. Locally grown ingredients such as wild plants cuisines are popular, especially in autumn. Traditional noodle shops of Soba and Udon are suitable for vegetarians but not for vegans, as they take fish based soup. However some noodle shops can arrange it for vegans, so ask the shop if they can.

There is a vegetarian/vegan restaurant called "Myogaya", near Takayama station (1 minute walk). Basically Myogaya serves lunch only (11:30-14:30) but can serve dinner (17:00-20:00) upon reservation at 0577-32-0426. Closed on Sunday.

Also Cafe flore (also close to station, about 5 minutes on foot) can serve Macrobiotic meals upon reservation at 0577-35-0099. But the owner do not understand English or whatever kind of foreign languages, so, please be prepared for Japanese conversation!
Cafe flore can also serve vegetarian dishes, and 100% organic dishes are available upon request ahead. Business hour: 10:00-17:00, 18:00-22:00.
